"These all died in faith"(Hebrews 11:13).

Behold the epitaph of all those blessed saints who passed away before the coming of our Lord! It does not matter how they died, whether of old age or by violent means. This one point in which they all agree is the one most worthy of record: "These all died in faith." In faith they lived. It was their comfort, their guide, their motive, and their support. In the same spiritual grace they died, ending their life with the sweet melody they had sung for so long. They did not die resting in the flesh or upon their own achievements. They never wavered from their first commitment to God, but held to the way of faith to the end. Faith is as precious to die by as it is to live by. Dying in faith has distinct reference to the past. They believed the promises which had been made before. They were assured that their sins were blotted out through the mercy of God. Dying in faith also concerns the present. These saints were confident of their acceptance by God. They enjoyed the beams of His love and rested in His faithfulness. Dying in faith looks into the future. They fell asleep trusting that the Messiah would surely come. When He appears upon the earth in the last day, they will rise from their graves to behold Him. To them, the pains of death were only the birth pangs of a better state. Take courage as you read this epitaph. Your journey through this life is one of faith, and the circumstances seldom bring joy. The brightest and the best have followed the same path. Look to Jesus, the Author and Finisher or your faith. Thank Him for giving you the same precious faith that belonged to the souls now in glory.

March 22

"Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me,

be with me where I am"(John 17:24).

Death! Why do you snatch away the excellent ones of the earth, in whom is all our delight? Oh, stop your work and spare the righteousness! Death takes the dearest of our friends. The most generous, the most prayerful, the most holy, the most devoted must die. And why? jesus prayed,    "Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am." This prayer bears them on eagles¡¯ wings to heaven. Every time a believer mounts from this earth to Paradise, it is an answer to Christ¡¯s prayer. An old saint remarked, "Many times Jesus and His people pull against one another in prayer. You bend your knee in prayer and say, "Father, I will that Thy saints be with me where I am:"Christ says, "Father, I will that they also whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am." Thus the disciple is opposing the purpose of his Lord. The soul cannot be in both places - the beloved one cannot be with Christ and with you, too. Now, which prayer will be answered? I am sure, though it causes great agony, you would say, "Jesus, not my will, but Thine be done." You would give up your prayer for your loved one¡¯s life, if you could realize that Christ is praying in the opposite direction. Lord, You shall have our loved ones. By faith, we let them go.
