July 31
Evening

¡°And these are the singers ... they were employed in that work day and night¡±(1 Chronicles 9:33).

It was ordered in the temple that the sacred chant would never cease. The singers constantly praised the Lord whose mercy endures forever. As mercy did not cease to rule either by day or night, so neither did music hush its holy ministry. There is a lesson for believers in the ceaseless song of Zion's temple. You, too, are a debtor. See to it that your gratitude, like love, never fails. God's prise is constant in heaven, your final dwelling place. Learn to practice the eternal hallelujah. As the sun scatters its light over the earth, its beams awaken grateful believers to turn their morning hymn. By the priesthood of the saints, perpetual praise is kept up at all hours. It wraps our globe in a mantle of thanksgiving and fastens it with a golden belt of song. The Lord always deserves to be praised for who He is, for His works of creation and providence, for His goodness toward His creatures, and especially for the act of redemption. In addition to this, there are all the marvelous blessings flowing in an endless stream. It is always beneficial to praise the Lord. It cheers the day and brightens the night. It lightens the toil and softens sorrow. It sheds a sanctifying radiance over earthly gladness which makes the world less able to blind us with its glare. Do we have something to sing about at this moment? Can we weave a song out of our present joys, our past deliverances, or our future hopes? By the love of Jesus, let us be stirred to close the day with a psalm of sanctified gladness.
