Evening
“A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench”(Matthew 12:20).
What is weaker than the bruised reed or the smoking flax? A reed that grows in the marsh snaps as soon as the wild duck touches it. If the foot of a man brushes against it, it is bruised and broken. Every wind that flits across the river moves it to and fro. Nothing is more frail or brittle, with an existence that is more in jeopardy, than a bruised reed. Look at the smoking flax. It has a spark within it, but it is almost smothered. An infant's breath might blow it out; nothing has a more precarious existence than its flame. Weak things are described here, yet Jesus says of them, “The smoking flax I will not quench; the bruised reed I will not break.” Some of God's children are made strong to do mighty works for Him. But the majority of His people are a timid, trembling race. They are like starlings, frightened at every passer-by - a fearful little flock. If temptation comes, they are caught like birds in a snare. If trial threatens, they are ready to faint. Tossed by every turbulent breeze, they drift along like a sea bird on the crest of the billows - weak things, without strength, without foresight. Yet because they are so weak, they have this promise made especially to them. How this shows us the compassion of Jesus - so gentle, tender, and considerate! We need never shrink back from His touch. We need never fear a harsh word from Him. Though He will childe us for our weakness, He does not rebuke. Bruised reeds will have no blows from Him, and the smoking flax will receive no dampening frowns.

무엇이 상한 갈대나 꺼져가는 심지보다 더 약하겠는가?
늪에서 자라는 갈대는 들오리가 그것을 건드리자마자 딱 꺾입니다. 만일 사람의 발이 갈대에 부딪히면 그것은 상하고, 부러집니다. 강을 가로질러 부는 모든 바람은 갈대를 이리 저리로 흔듭니다. 더 위태로운 존재로서, 그 어떤 것도 상한 갈대보다 더 여리거나 부러지기 쉬운 것은 없습니다.
꺼져가는 심지를 보십시오. 심지는 그안에 불꽃을 갖고 있습니다. 그러나 그것은 거의 꺼져가고 있습니다. 어린애의 숨결(호흡)로도 그것을 불어 끌 수 있을지도 모릅니다. 그 어떤 것도 그 심지(꺼져가는 심지)의 불꽃보다 더 위험한 존재를 갖고 있는 것은 없습니다.
약한 것들이 여기(마 12:20)에 기술되고 있습니다. 그러나 예수님은 이들에 관하여 다음과 같이 말씀하시고 있습니다.
"상한 갈대를 꺾지 아니하며 꺼져가는 심지를 끄지 아니하리라"(마 12:20)라고.
어떤 하나님의 자녀들은 주님을 위하여 힘센 일을 하기 위하여 튼튼하게 만들어졌습니다. 그러나 대부분의 하나님의 백성들은 겁 많고, 잘 떠는 사람들(인종)입니다. 그들은 모든 통행인에 놀라는 찌르레기 같습니다(즉 지나가는 사람들의 발자국 소리에도 놀라는 찌르레기 새 같습니다). - 즉 두려움 많은 소자들(신자들)입니다. 만일 시험이 오면 그들은 새들같이 올가미에 걸립니다. 시련이 위협하면 그들은 쉽사리 기가 죽습니다. 모든 휘몰아치는 풍파에 던져 올려지면, 그들은 바다의 큰 물결위에 떠있는 바다새같이 표류합니다 -
힘도 없고, 지혜도 없고, 통찰력도 없는 약한 것들입니다. 그러나 그들은 그토록 약하기 때문에, 그들은 특별히 그들에게 이 약속을 만들게 했습니다(즉, 그들이 매우 연약하기 때문에 그들에게 특별히 이 약속이 주어졌습니다).
이것은 예수님의 연민(동정심)을 우리에게 얼마나 잘 보여 주고 있습니까!
- 그토록 친절하시고, 상냥하시고, 사려 깊으신 연민(compassion)을!
우리는 결코 주님의 접촉(손대심)을 겁내서 움츠릴 필요가 없습니다.
우리는 주님의 엄한 말씀을 결코 두려워 할 필요가 없습니다.
비록 주님이 우리의 약함에 대하여 우리를 꾸짖으실지라도, 그는 힐책(詰責)하시지 않습니다. 상한 갈대들은 주님으로부터 강풍같은 타격(불행)을 받지 않을 것입니다. 그리고 꺼져가는 심지는 눈살을 찌푸리며 세게 입김을 부는 얼굴 표정을 만나지 않을 것입니다(즉, 주님은 결코 꺼져가는 심지 불을 얼굴을 찡그리시며 끄시지 않으실 것입니다).
