Evening
“Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time is come. For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof”(Psalm 102:13-14).
A selfish man in trouble is very hard to comfort because the springs of his comfort lie entirely within himself. But a Christian has other springs which supply comfort besides those which lie within. He can go to God and find abundant help. He can receive consolation in things relating to the world at large, to his country, and above all, to the Church. David was exceedingly sorrowful when he wrote, “I am like an owl of the desert. I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top”(Psalm 102:6-7). The only way he could comfort himself was in the reflection that God would have mercy upon Zion. Though he was sad, yet Zion would prosper; however desperate his own circumstances, Zion would arise. Learn to comfort yourself in God's gracious dealing toward the Church. Although your way is dark, you can still rejoice with the triumphs of His cross and the spread of His truth. Our personal troubles are forgotten while we look, not only upon what God has done and is doing for Zion, but on the glorious things He will yet do for His Church. Whenever you are sad of heart and heavy in spirit, forget yourself and your little concerns and seek the welfare and prosperity of God's people. When you bend your knee in prayer to God, do not limit your petition to the narrow circle of your own life. Send out prayers for the Church's prosperity. “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem”(Psalm 122:6), and your own soul will be refreshed.

○ 요절: "주께서 일어나사 시온을 긍휼히 여기시리니 지금은 그를 긍휼히 여기실 때라. 정한 기한이 옴이니이다. 주의 종들이 시온의 돌들을 즐거워하며 그 티끌도 연휼히 여기나이다."(시 102:13-14)
곤란 중에 있는 자기본위의(이기적인) 사람은 그의 위안의 샘들이 완전히 그 자신안에 놓여 있기 때문에 위로하는 것이 매우 어렵습니다. 그러나 그리스도인은 그 자신 안에 있는 것들 외에 위로를 공급하는 다른 샘들을 갖고 있습니다.
그는 하나님께로 가서 풍성한 도움을 발견할 수 있습니다. 그는 일반적으로 세상에, 그의 국가에, 그리고 무엇보다 교회에 관련된 것들에서 위로를 받을 수 있습니다.
다윗은 매우 비통했을 때, "나는 광야의 당아새 같고, 황폐한 곳의 부엉이 같이 되었아오며 내가 밤을 새우니 지붕 위에 외로운 참새 같으니이다."(시 102:6-7) 라고 기록했습니다.
다윗이 자신을 위로할 수 있었던 유일한 방법은 하나님께서 시온에 긍휼을 베푸실 것이라는 묵상(숙고)에 있었습니다. 다윗은 비록 슬펐지만, 시온은 번영할 것입니다. 그 자신의 환경이 아무리 절망적일지라도 시온은 일어날 것이었습니다.
교회를 위하여 하시는 하나님의 은혜로운 행위 속에서 그대 자신을 위로하도록 배우십시오.
비록 그대의 길이 어두울지라도 그대는 여전히 주님의 십자가의 승리와 그의 진리의 전파로 기뻐할 수 있습니다. 우리의 개인적인 곤란들은, 우리가 하나님이 행하신 것과 시온을 위하여 하시고 있는 것뿐만 아니라 주께서 여전히 그의 교회를 위하여 행하실 영광스러운 일들을 바라보는 동안 잊어집니다.
그대는 그대의 심령이 슬프고 무거울 때마다 그대 자신과 그대의 하찮은 염려들을 잊어버리십시오.
그리고 하나님의 백성의 행복과 번영을 추구하십시오.
그대가 그대의 무릎을 꿇고 하나님께 기도할 때 그대의 간청을 그대 자신의 좁은 인생의 범위에 제한하지 마십시오.
교회의 번영을 위한 기도들을 올려 보내십시오.
"예루살렘을 위하여 평안을 구하십시오."(시 122:6)
그러면 그대 자신의 영혼은 새 기운을 얻을 것입니다.
