Evening
"When my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I"(Psalm 61:2).
Most of us know what it is to be overwhelmed in heart. Discoveries of inward corruption will do this if the Lord permits the deep waters of our sinful nature to become troubled and cast up mire and dirt. Disappointments and heartbreaks will do this when billow after billow rolls over us, and we are like a broken shell hurled about by the surf. Blessed be God, at such times we are not without an all-sufficient solace. Our God is the harbor of weather-beaten ships, the hospice of forlorn pilgrims. He is higher than we are. His mercy is higher than our sins, and His love is higher than our thoughts. It is pitiful to see men put their trust in something lower than themselves. Our confidence is fixed upon our high and glorious Lord. He is a Rock since He never changes, and He is a high Rock because the tempests which overwhelm us roll far below at His feet. If we get under the shelter of this lofty rock, we may defy the hurricane, for all is calm under the protection of the towering cliff. The confusion of the troubled mind is often so severe that we need a heavenly Guide to this divine shelter. O Lord, by Your Holy Spirit, teach us the way of faith and lead us into Your rest. The wind blows us out to sea, and the helm does not respond to our weak hand. You alone can steer us between the sunken rocks and bring us safely into the fair haven. How dependent we are upon You to direct us wisely and steer us into safety and peace.

○ 요절: "내 마음이 눌릴 때에 땅 끝에서부터 주께 부르짖으오리니 나보다 높은 바위에 나를 인도하소서." (시 61:2)
마음이 눌린다는 것이 무엇인가를(무엇을 의미하는 것인지를) 우리들의 대부분이 알고 있습니다. 만일 주님께서 우리의 죄성(罪性)의 깊은 바다를 요동치게 하여 오물과 진흙을 던져 올리게 하신다면, 우리의 내면에 감추어져 있는 타락(부패)을 발견하게 되고, 그 발견들로 말미암아 내 마음이 눌리게 될 것입니다(즉, 우리가 고난을 통하여 우리의 죄의 본성의 깊은 바다에 숨겨 있는 허물과 죄를 깨닫게 되어 양심의 가책을 받게 되는 것입니다).
계속 밀려오는 큰 물결이 우리를 뒹굴려서 우리가 밀려오는 파도에 의하여 깨진 조가비처럼 세차게 내던져질 때 실망과 비통으로 우리의 마음은 눌리게 될 것입니다.
하나님을 찬송하리로다. 그럴 때마다 우리는 충분한 위로가 없지 않습니다(즉, 온전히 풍족한 위로가 있습니다).
우리의 하나님은 비바람에 시달린 배들의 항구이고, 고독한 순례자들의 숙박소입니다. 주님은 우리보다 더 높으십니다. 그의 긍휼은 우리의 죄보다 더 크십니다. 그리고 그의 사랑은 우리의 생각보다 더 높습니다(즉, 주님의 사랑은 우리가 상상할 수 없이 높고 크십니다).
사람들이 그들 자신보다 더 저급한 것을 그들의 의지(trust)로 삼는 것을 보면 가련합니다. 그러나 우리의 신뢰(확신)는 우리의 높고 영광스러운 주님께 고정되어 있습니다. 그분은 결코 변하시지 않는 큰 반석(a Rock)이십니다. 그리고 그분은 우리를 압도하는 대폭풍우를 저 밑에 그의 발치에서 굴리시기 때문에 높은 반석이십니다. 만일 우리가 이 높은 바위의 피난처에 들어가면, 허리케인(폭풍)도 막아낼 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 그 높이 솟은 절벽의 보호로 모든 것이 평온하기 때문입니다.
괴로움을 받는 심령의 낭패는 너무 통렬해서 우리는 이 하나님의 안식처에로 인도하시는 하늘의 가이드(Guide, 안내자)를 필요로 합니다. 오 주님, 주님의 성령에 의하여 우리에게 믿음의 길을 가르쳐 주시고, 주님의 안식처로 우리를 인도하여 주십시오. 바람이 우리를 바다로 내붑니다. 그리고 키(배의 조종장치)는 우리의 연약한 손에 반응하지 않습니다(움직여지지 않습니다). 주님만이 물에 잠긴 암초 사이로 우리를 조종하실 수 있습니다. 그리고 아름다운 항구(피난처)로 우리를 안전하게 데려가실 수 있습니다.
주님이 우리를 지혜롭게 인도하시고, 우리를 안전과 평안 안으로 조종해 가시도록 우리는 주님을 얼마나 의지하고 있는지요.
