Evening
"Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea?"(Job 38:16).
Some things in nature must remain a mystery to the most intelligent and enterprising investigators. Universal know- ledge is for God alone. If this is true concerning the things which are seen and temporal, it is even more so in matters that are spiritual and eternal. Why, then, have I been torturing my brain with speculations as to destiny, will, fixed fate, and human responsibility? I am no more able to comprehend these deep and dark truths than I can find out the depth from which the ocean draws her watery stores. Why am I so curious to know the reason of my Lord's providences and the motives of His actions? Will I ever be able to clasp the sun in my fist and hold the universe in my palm? Yet, these are as a drop in a bucket compared with the Lord my God. Let me not strive to understand the infinite, but rather spend my strength in love. What I cannot gain by intellect, I can possess by affection. Let that satisfy me. I cannot penetrate the heart of the sea, but I can enjoy the healthful breezes which sweep over its bosom, and I can sail over its blue waves. If I could enter the springs of the sea, the feat would serve no useful purpose either to myself or others. It would not save the sinking ship or give back the drowned mariner to his weeping wife and children. Neither would my solving deep mysteries prove anything. The least love to God and the simplest act of obedience to Him are better than the most profound knowledge. My Lord, I leave the infinite to You and pray that You would keep me from a love for the tree of knowledge that would deprive me of the tree of life.

○ 요절: "네가 바다 근원에 들어갔었느냐 깊은 물밑으로 걸어다녔었느냐."(욥 38:16)
자연의 어떤 사물들은 가장 지성적이고, 진취적인 탐구자들에게도 신비로 남아 있습니다. 하나님만이 모든 것을 다 아시는 전지(全知)의 보편적 지식을 갖고 계십니다. 만일 이것이 가시적이고 임시적인 것들에 관한 진리라면 영적이고 영원한 문제들에 있어서는 더욱 더 그러할 것입니다.
그런데 왜 우리는 숙명, 의지, 정해진 운명, 그리고 인간 책임에 관한 사색으로 나의 두뇌를 괴롭히고 있습니까? 바다가 간직하고 있는 그 엄청난 바다의 물(water stores)을 끌어오는 그 깊은 바다샘을 내가 발견할 수 없는 것과 마찬가지로 나는 심오하고 비밀한 진리를 이해할 수 없습니다.
그런데 왜 나는 나의 주님의 섭리의 이유, 그분의 행동의 동기에 대하여 그토록 호기심을 갖고 알고 싶어합니까?
도대체 내가 나의 주먹에 태양을 잡을 수 있고, 나의 손바닥에 우주를 쥘 수 있습니까? 이것들은 나의 주 하나님과 비교하면 바께쓰(물통)속의 한 방물의 물과 같습니다.
나로 하여금 무한한 것을 이해하려고 노력하지 말게 하시고 오히려 나의 힘을 사랑하는 데 쓰게 하소서. 나는 지성(知性)에 의하여 얻을 수 없는 것을 사랑에 의하여 소유할 수 있습니다. 그것으로 나를 만족케 하소서. 나는 바다의 중심을 꿰뚫을 수 없지만 바다의 가슴(표면)을 휩쓸고 가는 건강에 좋은 산들바람(미풍)을 즐길 수 있습니다. 그리고 나는 그 푸른 파도 위를 항해할 수 있습니다.
만일 내가 바다의 근원(샘)에 들어갈 수 있다 해도 그 묘기는 나 자신이나 다른 사람들에게 어떤 유용한 효과도 주지 못합니다. 그것은 침몰하는 배를 구조하거나, 익사한 선원을 그의 눈물 흘리는 부인과 자녀들에 돌려주지 못합니다.
또한 내가 심오한 신비들을 해결한다 해도 별것이 못될 것입니다. 하나님을 위한 아무리 작은 사랑일지라도 그리고 그분을 위한 가장 단순한 순종일지라도 가장 심오한 지식보다 더 낫습니다.
나의 주님, 나는 무한한 것들을 주님께 맡깁니다. 그리고 주님께서 나에게서 생명나무를 빼앗아 갈 지식의 나무에 대한 사랑을 내가 하지 못하게 하여 주시기를 기도합니다.
