Evening
"The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost"(John 14:26).
We live in an age that has experienced the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Jesus does not cheer us by His physical presence as He will do one glorious day, but by the indwelling and constant abiding of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter of the Church. It is His job to console the hearts of God's people. He convicts of sin; He illuminates and instructs; but the main parts of His work include making glad the hearts of the renewed, strengthening the weak, and lifting up all that are bowed down. He does this by revealing Jesus to them. The Holy Spirit consoles, but Christ is the consolation. As an illustration, the Holy Spirit is the Physician, but Jesus is the medicine. He heals the wound, but it is by applying the holy ointment of Christ's name and grace. If we give the Holy Spirit the Greek name of Paraclete meaning Comforter or Advocate, then our heart gives our blessed Lord Jesus the title of the Paraclesis or Comfort and Consolation. With this rich provision for his need, why should the Christian be sad and discouraged? The Holy Spirit has graciously come to be your Comforter. Do you suppose, O weak and trembling believer, that He will be negligent of His sacred trust? Has He undertaken something that He cannot or will not perform? If it is His work to strengthen and to comfort you, do you suppose He has forgotten His business, or that He will fail to accomplish His loving work? Do not think so little of the tender and blessed Spirit whose name is the Comforter. He delights to give the oil of joy for mourning and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Trust in Him, and He will surely comfort you until the house of mourning is closed forever, and the marriage feast begins.

우리는 성령의 부어주심을 경험하는 시대에 살고 있습니다. 예수님은 그분이 장차 오실 영광의 날에 하실 것같은 그의 신체적(가시적) 임재에 의하여 우리를 위로하시지 않고 교회의 보혜사(the Comforter of the Church)이신 성령의 지속적인 내주하심에 의하여 우리를 격려하십니다.
하나님의 백성들의 마음을 위로하시는 것이 그분의 임무입니다. 그분은 죄를 깨닫게 하십니다(책망하십니다). 또 그분은 조명하시고 가르치십니다. 그러나 그분의 주요한 사역은 새로 난자들(중생한 자들)의 마음을 즐겁게 하고, 약한 자들을 강하게 하며, 주님을 경배하게 된 모든 사람을 높여 주시는 일을 포함합니다. 그분(성령)은 그들에게 예수님을 계시하심으로써 이 일을 하십니다. 성령은 위로하십니다. 그러나 그리스도는 위로 자체이십니다. 예(보기)를 들면, 성령은 의사이고, 예수님은 약입니다. 성령은 상처를 치료합니다. 그러나 그것은 그리스도의 이름과 은혜라는 연고를 처방함으로써 이루어집니다.
만일 우리가 성령에게 보혜사(Comforter)나 대언자(Advocate)를 의미하는 헬라어 파라클레테(Paraclete)라는 이름을 드린다면, 우리의 마음은 우리의 복되신 주 예수님께는 파라클레시스(Paraclesis), 즉 위로(Comfort)와 위안(Consolation)의 칭호를 드립니다. 그(그리스도인)의 필요를 위하여 이렇게 풍성한 보고(공급)가 있는데 왜 그리스도인이 슬퍼하고 낙심해야 합니까? 고맙게도 성령은 그대의 보혜사(위로하시는 분)로 오셨습니다.
오 두려워 떠는 약한 자여, 그대는 그분이 그가 맡은 그의 신성한 책임을 게을리할 것이라고 생각합니까? 그분은 그분이 할 수 없거나 하지 않을 일을 떠 맡으셨습니까? 만일 그대를 강하게 하고, 그대를 위로하는 것이 그분의 사역(work)이라면, 그대는 그분이 그의 일을 잊었거나, 또는 그분이 그의 사랑의 사역을 성취하지 못할 것이라고 상상합니까?
그 이름이 보혜사(위로자)이신 다정하시고 복되신 성령을 과소평가하지 마십시오. 그분은 애통하는 자에게는 기쁨의 기름을 부어 주시기를 기뻐합니다. 그리고 낙담한 심령들에게는 칭찬의 옷을 입혀 주시기를 기뻐하십니다. 그분을 의지하십시오. 그러면 애통의 집이 영원히 닫히고, 혼인잔치가 시작될 때까지 그분은 그대를 확실히 위로하실 것입니다.
