Evening
"A living dog is better than a dead lion"(Ecclesiastes 9:4).
Life is a precious thing, and in its humblest form it is superior to death. This truth is also certain in spiritual things. It is better to be the least in the Kingdom of heaven than the greatest outside of it. The lowest degree of grace is superior to the Kingdom of heaven than greatest outside of it. The lowest degree of grace is superior to the noblest development of the unredeemed nature. The Holy Spirit implants divine life in a man's soul and makes a precious deposit which none of the refinements of education can equal. The thief on the cross excels Caesar on his throne. Lazarus among the dogs is better than Cicero among the senators. The most unlettered Christian is superior to Plato in the sight of God. Life is the badge of nobility in the realm of spiritual things. Men without it are only coarser or finer specimens of the same lifeless material. They all need to be made alive, for they are dead in trespasses and sins. A living, loving, gospel sermon, however unlearned in matter and awkward in style, is better than the finest discourse that lacks the Holy Spirit's anointing and power. The poorest spiritual preacher is infinitely preferred to the exquisite orator who has no wisdom except words and no energy but that of the sound of his voice. The same holds true of our prayers and other religious exercises. If we are quickened in them by the Holy Spirit, they are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Our grand religious formalities in which our hearts are absent, like dead lions, are mere carrion in the sight of the living God. Oh, for living groans and living sighs rather than lifeless songs and dead calms. The snarling of the dog of hell will at least keep us awake, but what greater curse can a man have than dead faith? Make us alive in You, O Lord!

생명은 소중한 것입니다. 그리고 아무리 비천한 모습일지라도 그것은 죽음보다 낫습니다. 이 진리는 또한 영적인 사실들에도 확실합니다. 천국에서 가장 작은 자일지라도 천국 밖에서 가장 위대한 자보다 더 낫습니다. 가장 낮은 정도의 은혜일지라도 구속되지 못한 본성의 가장 고상한 발전(development)보다 더 우월합니다. 성령께서 사람의 영혼안에 하나님의 생명을 심고, 어떤 훌륭한 교육의 성과도 맞먹을 수 없는 귀중한 보화를 만듭니다. 십자가 위의 강도는 그의 보좌에 앉아 있는 가이사를 능가합니다(주 1).
개들 가운데 있는 나사로는 로마 원로원 의원들 중에 있는 키케로(106-43 B.C)보다 더 낫습니다(주 2). 하나님이 보시기에는 가장 배우지 못한 그리스도인일지라도 플라톤(427-347 B.C)보다 우월합니다.
생명은 영적 영역(세계)에서의 귀족(하나님의 가족)의 뱃지(badge)입니다.
생명이 없는 사람들은 더 조잡하거나 더 세련되었던 간에 똑같이 생명없는 물질로 만든 표본일 뿐입니다. 그들 모두는 살려질 필요가 있습니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 허물과 죄로 죽어 있기 때문입니다. 비록 내용이 배우지 못해서 보잘 것 없을지라도, 그리고 문체의 형식이 어색할지라도, 생명력 있고, 사랑이 넘치는 복음설교는 성령의 기름 부음과 능력이 부족한 가장 우수한 강연보다 더 좋습니다. 가장 빈약한 영적 설교자일지라도 지혜없는 말뿐이고, 그의 목청의 소리외에 영적 능력(energy)은 없는 뛰어난 웅변가보다 무한히 낫습니다. 우리의 기도들과 종교적 실천들에도 똑같은 진리가 적용됩니다.
만일 우리가 성령에 의하여 그것들(우리의 기도들과 종교적 실천들) 속에서 소성케 된다면, 그것들은 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님께서 기꺼이 받아들일 것입니다. 우리의 마음이 없는 우리의 거창한 종교의식(儀式)들은 죽은 사자처럼 살아계신 하나님의 눈에는 단지 썩은 고기에 불과합니다.
오, 생명없는 노래와 죽은 평온보다는 오히려 살아있는 신음과 살아있는 한숨소리가 있기를 기원합니다. 지옥의 개의 으르렁거림은 적어도 우리를 깨어 있게 합니다. 그러나 사람이 죽은 믿음보다 더 큰 어떤 저주를 가질 수 있겠습니까?(즉, 죽은 믿음보다 더 큰 무슨 저주가 있을 수 있겠습니까?)
오 주님, 우리를 주안에서 소성케 하소서!
