Evening
“He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils”(Mark 16:9).
Mary of Magdala was the victim of a fearful evil. She was possessed by not one devil only, but seven. These dreadful inmates caused much pain and pollution to the poor frame in which they had found a lodging. Hers was a hopeless, horrible case. She could not help herself, neither could any human lessen her pain. But Jesus passed that way. Although He was unsought and probably even resisted by the poor demoniac, He uttered the word of power. Mary of Magdala became a testimony of the healing power of Jesus. All the seven demons left her, never to return, forcibly ejected by the Lord of all. What a blessed deliverance! From delirium to deliverance! From delirium to delight, from despair to peace, from hell to heaven! She immediately became a constant follower of Jesus, catching His every word, follower His steps, sharing His life. She became His generous helper, first among that group of healed and grateful women who ministered to Him. When Jesus was lifted up in crucifixion, Mary remained the sharer of His shame. She could not die on the cross with Jesus, but she stood as near to it as she could. When His body was taken down, she watched to see where it was laid. She was the faithful and watchful believer - last at the sepulcher where Jesus slept, first at the grave when He arose. Her beloved Rabbi called her by her name and made her His messenger of good news to the trembling disciples and Peter. Thus, grace found her as a maniac and made her a minister, cast out devils and let her behold angels, delivered her from Satan and united her forever to the Lord Jesus. May I also be such a miracle of grace!

○ 요절: "예수께서 안식 후 첫날 이른 아침에 살아나신 후 전에 일곱 귀신을 쫓아내어 주신 막달라 마리아에게 먼저 보이시니."(막 19:9)
막달라 마리아는 무서운 악의 희생자였습니다. 그 여인은 한 귀신만이 아니라 일곱 귀신에게 사로잡혔습니다. 이 무서운 동거자들(일곱귀신들)은 그들이 거처로 삼았던 가련한 마리아의 몸에 많은 고통과 폐해를 주었습니다. 그 여인의 질고는 절망적이고 끔찍한 상태였습니다. 그 여인은 자기 힘으로는 어쩔 수 없었고, 어떤 사람도 그 여인의 고통을 덜어줄 수 없었습니다. 그런데 예수님이 그 길을(그 방향으로) 지나가셨습니다(즉, 막달라 마리아를 만날 수 있는 곳을 통과하셨습니다).
비록 예수님은 마리아로부터 요청도 받지 않았고, 아마 귀신들린 그 불쌍한 여인이 반항했을지라도, 주님은 귀신을 내쫓는 권능의 말씀을 선포하셨습니다.
그래서 막달라 마리아는 예수님의 치유의 능력의 한 증거가 되었습니다. 이 일곱 귀신은 모두가 만유(萬有)의 주님의 강력한 힘에 의하여 쫓겨나서, 그 여인을 떠난 다음 다시는 돌아오지 못했습니다. 얼마나 복된 구원입니까! 정신 착란에서 환희로, 절망에서 평안으로, 지옥에서 천국으로!
그 여인은 곧 예수님의 충실한 제자가 되어 주님의 모든 말씀을 받아들였고, 그의 발걸음을 따랐고, 주님의 삶에 동참했습니다. 그 여인은 고침을 받고 감사한 마음으로 주님을 섬겼던 여인들 중에서 으뜸이 되는 헌신적인 주님의 도우미(helper)가 되었습니다. 예수께서 십자가에 달리셨을 때도 주님의 치욕(창피)의 동참자로 남아 있었습니다(즉, 주님의 십자가 곁을 떠나지 않았습니다).
그 여인은 예수님과 함께 십자가에서 죽을 수는 없었지만 그 여인은 할 수 있는 한 십자가 가까이에 서 있었습니다. 주님의 시체가 십자가에서 내려졌을 때, 그 여인은 주님의 시체가 놓이는 장소를 주시(注視)했습니다. 그 여인은 참으로 신실하고 주의깊은 신자였습니다. - 그 여인은 예수께서 잠드셨던(장사되셨던) 무덤에서는 제일 나중까지 그 자리를 지켰고, 주님이 부활하셨을 때에는 제일 처음 무덤에 찾아갔던 사람입니다.
막달라 마리아의 사랑하는 랍비(예수님)는 "마리아야" 라고(주 1) 그 여인의 이름을 부르셨고, 두려워 떨고 있는 제자들과 베드로에게 기쁜 소식을 전하는 사자(使者)로 삼으셨습니다. 이렇게 은혜는 미친 여자였던 막달라 마리아를 발견해서 그 여인을 사역자로 만들었습니다. 은혜는 일곱 귀신들을 쫓아내서 그 여인으로 하여금 천사들을 보게 했습니다. 또 은혜는 사탄으로부터 그 여인을 구원하여 그 여인을 영원토록 주 예수께 연합시켰습니다.
나에게도 그와 같은 기적이 일어나기를 기원합니다!
