Evening
"My people shall dwell ... in quiet resting places"(Isaiah 32:18).
Peace and rest do not belong to the unredeemed. They are the unique possession of the Lord's people. The God of Peace gives perfect peace to those whose hearts stay close to Him. When man was innocent, God gave him the flowery branches of Eden as his quiet resting places. How quickly sin destroyed the fair dwelling of innocence! In the day of wrath, when the flood swept away a guilty race, Noah's family was quietly secured in the resting place of the ark. It floated them from the condemned world into the new earth of the rainbow and the covenant, typifying Jesus, the ark of our salvation. Israel rested safely beneath the blood-sprinkled habitations of Egypt when the destroying angel killed the firstborn. In the wilderness, the shadow of the pillar of cloud and the water flowing from the rock gave the weary pilgrims sweet repose. At this hour, we rest in the promises of our faithful God, knowing that His words are full of truth and power. We rest in the doctrines of His Word which are consolation itself. We rest in the covenant of His grace which is a haven of delight. We are more highly favored than David in Adullam or Jonah beneath his gourd, for none can invade or destroy our shelter. Jesus is the quiet resting place of His people. When we draw near to Him in the breaking of bread, in the hearing of the Word, the searching of the Scriptures, prayer, or praise, we find that peace returns to our spirits.

○ 요절: "내 백성이 화평한 집과 안전한 거처와 종용히 쉬는 곳에 있으려니와."(사 32:18)
평안과 안식은 구속받지 못한 사람에게 속하지 않습니다(구속받지 못한 사람에게는 평안과 안식이 없습니다). 그들은 주님의 백성들만이 갖는 독특한 소유입니다. 평강의 하나님은 마음을 하나님께 가까이 두고 있는 사람들에게 완전한 평안을 주십니다.
사람이 무죄했을 때 하나님은 그에게 그의 조용한 안식처로서 화려한 꽃가지들로 덮인 에덴의 꽃동산을 주셨습니다. 그러나 그 순결하고 아름다운 거처를 죄가 얼마나 빨리 파괴했습니까!
홍수가 죄를 범한 인류를 쓸어버린 때인 진노의 날에, 노아의 가족은 방주의 안식처에서 평온한 가운데 안전하였습니다. 방주는 정죄받은 옛 세상으로부터 우리의 구원의 방주이신 예수님을 상징하면서 무지개와 언약의 새 땅으로 그들을 실어(띄워) 갔습니다.
이스라엘 백성들은 죽음의 천사(멸망시키는 천사)가 장자들을 죽일 때, 피를 뿌린 집 아래에서 안전하게 쉬었습니다. 광야에서는 구름기둥(주1)의 그림자와 반석에서 흘러나오는 물이 지친 순례자들에게 달콤한 안식(편안)을 주었습니다. 이 시간에 우리는 하나님의 말씀들이 진리와 권능으로 충만하다는 것을 알면서, 우리의 신실하신 하나님의 약속들 안에서 안식을 누리고 있습니다. 우리는 위로 자체이신 그분의 말씀의 교훈들 안에서 안식하고 있습니다. 우리는 기쁨의 항구(안식처)이신 그분의 은혜의 언약 안에서 안식합니다. 아둘람 굴(주2) 속에 있던 다윗보다, 또는 그의 조롱박 넝쿨(주3) 아래서 쉬던 요나보다 우리는 훨씬 더 높은 총애를 받고 있습니다. 왜냐하면 누구도 우리의 피난처(안식처)를 침범하거나 파멸시킬 수 없기 때문입니다. 예수님은 그의 백성의 평온한 안식처(조용히 쉬는 곳)입니다.(주4)
우리가 떡을 떼거나, 말씀을 들으면서, 성경을 공부하면서, 기도하거나 또는 찬송하면서 그분께 가까이 다가갈 때, 우리는 평안(평강)이 우리의 영혼들에게 돌아오는 것을 발견합니다.
