Evening
"Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man"(Proverbs 24:33-34).
The worst of sluggards only ask for a little slumber. They would be indignant if they were accused of total idleness. A little folding of the hands to sleep is all they crave, and they have a list of reasons to show that this indulgence is a very proper one. Yet, by labor is gone, and the field is overgrown with thorns. It is by little procrastination that men ruin their souls. They have no intention to delay for years - a few months will bring the more convenient time. Tomorrow they will attend to serious things. But like sands from an hourglass, time passes, life is wasted by drops, and seasons of grace are lost by little slumbers. May the Lord teach us this sacred wisdom, for otherwise a poverty of the worst sort awaits us - eternal poverty where we will beg for a mere drop of water in vain, Like a traveler steadily pursuing his journey, poverty overtakes the lazy, and ruin overthrows the undecided. Each hour brings the dreaded pursuer nearer. He does not pause by the way, for he is on his master's business and must not delay. As an armed man enters with authority and power, so want will come to the idle and death to the unrepentant. There will be no escape. Seek the Lord Jesus diligently before the solemn day dawns when it will be too late to plow and sow, too late to repent and believe. In harvest, it is useless to complain that the seed time was neglected. Faith and holy decision are available now. May we obtain them this night.

○ 요절: "네가 좀더 자자, 좀더 졸자, 손을 모으고 좀더 눕자 하니 네 빈궁이 강도같이 오며 네 곤핍이 군사같이 이르리라."(잠 24:33-34)
게으름뱅이 중 가장 나쁜 자들일지라도 단지 조금 더 자기를 청하는 사람들입니다. 그들은 전적인 게으름뱅이로 비난받는다면 그들은 화를 낼 것입니다. 사실 그들이 간청하는 모든 것은 단지 손을 모으고 좀(a little) 더 눕자는 것입니다. 그리고 그들이 이 방자한 행위(indulgence)가 매우 적당한 행동이라는 것을 보여주는 이유의 목록을 갖고 있습니다(즉 좀 더 자자는 행위에 대한 많은 변명의 이유들을 갖고 있습니다).
그러나 이 좀 더 쉬자(자자)는 것으로 하루는 사라지고, 일할 시간은 가버리고, 밭은 가시덤불로 뒤덮이게 됩니다. 사람들이 그들의 영혼을 망치는 것은 좀 꾸물거리는 삶 때문입니다.
그들은 여러 해 동안 지체할 마음을 갖고 있지 않습니다. - 몇 달이 지나면 형편이 더 좋은 때가 올 것입니다. 내일 그들은 본격적인 일들을 수행할 것입니다. 그러나 모래시계의 모래처럼 시간은 흘러가고 인생은 한 방울씩 허송됩니다. 그리고 은혜의 계절은 좀 더 조는 시간으로 잃어버립니다.
주님께서 이 거룩한 지혜를 우리에게 가르쳐 주시기를 소원합니다. 왜냐하면 그렇지 않으면 가장 악질적인 종류의 빈궁의 하나가 우리를 기다리고 있기 때문입니다. - 즉 그 빈궁은 우리가 단 한방울의 물을 구걸할지라도 수포로(in vain, 헛일로) 그치는 영원한 빈궁입니다. 여행자가 착실하게 그의 여행을 추구하듯이 가난은 게으른 자를 따라잡고, 파멸이 우유부단한 자들을 뒤엎습니다. 매시간은 우리가 두려워하는 추격자를 점점 더 가까이 데려옵니다. 그(추격자)는 길가에서 쉬지 않습니다. 왜냐하면 그는 그 주인(마귀)의 일을 하고 있고 지체해서는 안되기 때문입니다.
무장한 사람이 권세와 힘을 갖고 당당히 들어가는 것처럼 빈궁은 게으른 사람들에게 찾아오고, 죽음은 회개하지 않는 사람들에게 올 것입니다. 그것은 피할 길이 없습니다. 너무 늦어 땅을 갈거나 씨를 뿌리지 못하고, 너무 늦어 회개하고 믿음을 갖지 못하는 장엄한(엄숙한) 날이 동트기 전에 주 예수님을 부지런히 찾으십시오.
추수 때가 되어서 파종 시기에 게을렀던 것을 한탄해도 소용없습니다. 믿음과 거룩한 결단은 바로 지금 가능합니다(주1). 오늘밤 우리가 그 믿음과 결단을 얻기를 기원합니다.
