¡°Search the scriptures¡±(John 5:39).

The Greek word for search signifies a strict, close, diligent, and curious investigation. We must not be content with a superficial reading of a chapter or two of the Bible. With the candle of the Spirit, we must deliberately seek out the hidden meaning of the Word. Holy Scripture requires searching - much of it can only be learned by careful study. There is milk for babes, but also meat for strong men. The great theo- logian Tertullian exclaims, ¡°I adore the fulness of the Scriptures.¡± No man who merely skims the Book of God can profit by it. We must dig until we obtain the hidden treasure. The door of the Word is only opened by the key of diligence. The Scriptures are worthy of searching. They are the writings of God, bearing the divine stamp of approval. Who shall dare to treat them lightly? He who despises them despises the God who wrote them. The Word of God will repay searching. God does not tell us to sift through a mountain of chaff with a grain of wheat in it here and there. The Bible is winnowed corn - we have only to open the granary door and find it. Under the teaching of the Holy Spirit, Scripture glows with splendor of revelation. It is like a vast temple paved with gold and roofed with rubies and emeralds. The Scriptures reveal Jesus. ¡°They are they which testify of me¡±(John 5:39). No more powerful motive can be given to Bible readers than this: he who finds Jesus finds life, heaven, and all things. Great joy is is store for the one who searches his Bible and discovers his Savior.
