Evening
"Ye serve the Lord Christ"(Colossians 3:24).
To what choice group of officials was this word spoken? To kings, who proudly boast a divine right to rule? No - too often they serve themselves or Satan and forget God whose mercy permits them to wear their imitation majesty. Does Paul speak to those so-called "right reverend fathers in God,"the bishops, or the venerable archdeacons? No, indeed; Paul knew nothing of these inventions of man. Not even to pastors and teachers or to the wealthy and esteemed among believers was this word spoken, but to servants and to slaves. Among the toiling multitudes, the journeymen, laborers, and the domestic servants, the apostle found some of the Lord's chosen. To them he said, "Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ"(Colossians 3:23-24). This saying ennobles the weary routine of earthly employments and sheds a halo around the most humble occupations. To wash feet may be servile, but to wash His feet is royal work. To untie the shoelace is a poor job, but to loose the great Master's shoe is a princely privilege. The shop, the barn, and the kitchen become temples when men and women do all to the glory of God! Divine service is not a thing of a few hours and a few places, but all life becomes holiness to the Lord. Every place and thing may be as consecrated as the tabernacle and its golden candlestick.

○ 요절: "이는 유업의 상을 주께 받을 줄 앎이니 너희는 주 그리스도를 섬기느니라."(골 3;24)
이 말씀은 어떤 선택된 공직자들에게 말해진 것입니까? 교만하게 천부적 권리(하나님이 주신 권리)를 자랑하는 왕들에게 주신 말씀입니까? 아닙니다. - 그들은 너무 자주 그들 자신이나 사탄을 섬기고, 하나님께서 은혜로 그들에게 그들의 모방권세(imitation majesty, 본체가 아닌 임시적 권위)를 띠도록(갖도록) 하신 하나님을 잊고 있습니다.
바울 사도는 소위 "하나님 안에서 의로운 교부(reverend father)들"인 감독(주교)들이나, 존경할만한 부감독(부주교)들에게 말하는 것입니까? 정말로 그렇지 않습니다. 바울은 인간이 창안한 이런 직분을 전혀 알지 못했습니다. 심지어 목사들과 교사들, 또는 신자들 가운데서 부자들과 존경받는 자들에게 한 것도 아닙니다. 사실 바울 사도는 고생하는 사람들, 여행자들, 노동자들, 그리고 집안의 종들 중에서 주님의 택함을 받은 얼마의 사람들을 발견했습니다.
택함을 받은 그 사람들에게 그는 "무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 말라. 이는 유업의 상을 주께 받을 줄 앎이니 너는 주 그리스도를 섬기느니라."(골 3:23-24) 라고 말했습니다.
이 말씀은 틀에 박힌, 싫증나는 세상의 직무를 고상하게 하고 가장 비천한 직업들에게도 후광(영광)을 비추어 줍니다. 발을 씻는 것은 비굴한 일일지도 모르지만 주님의 발을 씻는 것은 고귀한 일입니다. 구두끈을 풀어 주는 것은 비천한 일이지만 위대한 주님의 신을 푸는 것은 왕자의 특권(고귀한 특권)입니다.
남자들과 여자들이 모든 일을 하나님의 영광을 위하여 행할 때에는, 가게, 광(외양간), 그리고 부엌도 성전이 될 수 있습니다. 하나님을 섬기는 일은 얼마의 시간과 어떤 장소에 한정되는 일이 아니고 온 삶이 주님을 위해 거룩해야 합니다. 모든 장소와 모든 사물이 성막과 성막의 금촛대만큼 신성하게 되어야 합니다.
