Evening
"With thee is the fountain of life"(Psalm 36:9).
There are times in our spiritual experience when human counsel, sympathy, or religion fail to comfort or help us. Why does our gracious God permit this? Perhaps it is because we have been living too much without Him. He, therefore, permits everything which we have been depending upon to be taken away that He may draw us to Himself. It is a blessed thing to live at the fountainhead. While our provisions are full, we are content, like Hagar and Ishmael, to go into the wilderness; but when those are dry, nothing will help us but the knowledge that "Thou God seest me"(Genesis 16:13). We are like the prodigal. We long for the food of the swine and forget our Father's house. Remember, we can make husks even out of forms of religion. They are blessed things, but if we put them in God's place, they are of no value. Anything becomes an idol when it keeps us away from God. A famine in the land may make us seek after our Lord all the more. The best position for a Christian is depending wholly and directly on God's grace, "having nothing, and yet possessing all things"(2 Corinthians 6:10). Let us never for a moment think our standing is due to our sanctification, our humility, or our feelings. We are saved only because Christ offered a full atonement. We are complete in Him. We have nothing of our own to trust in, but when we rest upon the merits of Jesus, we stand upon the only sure ground of confidence. Beloved, when we are brought to a thirsting condition, we are sure to turn to the fountain of life with eagerness.
