Evening
"Am I a sea, or a whale, that thou settest a watch over me?"(Job 7:12).
This was a strange question for Job to ask the Lord. He thought he was too insignificant to be so strictly watched and chastened. He did not feel that he was so unruly that he needed to be restrained. The inquiry was natural from one surrounded with such unexplainable miseries. But Job's question received a very humbling answer. It is true that man is not the sea - he is even more troublesome and unruly. The sea obediently respects its boundary, though it is a mere belt of sand. But self-willed man defies heaven and oppresses earth. There is no end to his rebellious rage. The sea, obedient to the moon, ebbs and flows with ceaseless regularity. It renders an active as well as a passive obedience. Man, however, is restless beyond his sphere. He sleeps within the lines of duty, and he is lazy where he should be active. He will neither come nor go at the divine command, but sullenly prefers to do what he should not and to leave undone that which is required of him. Every drop in the ocean, every beaded bubble, every foamy wave, and every shell and pebble feel the power of law and move at once. Oh, that our nature was even one thousandth part as much conformed to the will of God! We call the sea fickle and false, but how constant it is! Centuries before our fathers' days, the sea is where it was, beating on the same cliffs to the where it was, beating on the same cliffs to the same tune. But where is vain, fickle man? Can the wise man guess by what foolish sin he will next be seduced from his obedience? We require more watching than the billowy sea, for we are far more rebellious. Lord, rule us for Your own glory.

욥이 이 질문(욥 7:12)을 주님께 물은 것은 이상합니다. 욥이 자기가 너무 미미한 존재여서 그렇게 엄격하게 감시되고 징계 받을 리가 없다고 생각했습니다. 욥은 그가 속박(제지)을 받아야 할만큼 매우 무법한 존재라는 것을 깨닫지 못했습니다.
이 질문은 욥이 겪은 것같은 그런 설명할 수 없는 고통(불행)에 싸였던 사람에게서 나올 수 있는 당연한(자연스러운) 질문이었습니다. 그러나 욥의 질문은 매우 겸손하게 하는 대답을 받았습니다. 사람이 바다가 아니라는 것은 진실(사실)입니다. - 그러나 사람은 바다보다 훨씬 더 까다롭고 다루기 힘든 존재입니다. 바다는 비록 그 경계가 단지 모래띠(belt of sand)에 불과하지만 그의 경계(境界)를 공손히 존중합니다.
그러나 고집센 인간은 하늘을 무시하고 땅을 압도합니다. 인간의 반역의 분노(노도)는 끝이 없습니다. 바다는 끊임없이 규칙적으로 달(the moon)에 순종하고 썰물과 밀물에 순종합니다. 참으로 바다는 수동적인 순종은 물론 능동적인 순종을 합니다. 그러나 인간은 그의 본분을 안지키고 제멋대로 하는 종잡을 수 없는 (불안한) 존재입니다. 사람은 업무의 진행시간엔 졸고, 그가 적극적으로 활동해야 할 곳에서는 게으릅니다.
인간은 하나님의 명령에 따라 오지도 않고 가지도 않습니다. 그러나 오히려 부루퉁하여 그가 하지 말아야 할 것과 그에게 필요한 것을 방치해 두는 것을 선호합니다(더 좋아합니다).
대양(大洋)의 모든 물방울, 구슬같은 모든 물거품, 거품이 이는 모든 파도들, 그리고 모든 조가비와 자갈들은 법칙의 힘을 느끼고 즉시 움직입니다.
오, 우리의 본성(nature)이 하나님의 뜻에 천분의 일(1/1000) 만큼이라도 순응했으면 얼마나 좋겠습니까! 우리는 바다가 변덕스럽고 거짓되다고 말합니다. 그러나 바다야말로 얼마나 항상 일정합니까![즉, 바다는 항상(변함없이) 하나님이 세우신 자연법칙에 순종하고 있습니다] 우리의 조상의 시대보다 수세기 전에 있었던 바다는 그 자리에서 그때와 똑같은 절벽에 똑같은 파도소리로 철썩철썩 치면서 지금도 있습니다.
허영적이고, 변덕스러운 인간은 지금 어디에 있습니까?(즉, 허영에 차고 변덕스러운 인간은 도처에 있습니다) 지혜로운 사람은 그가 다음에 어떤 어리석은 죄에 의하여 그의 순종을 버리게 될 것을 알아차릴 수 있겠지요?(그러나 그런 지혜로운 사람이 어디에 있겠습니까?)
우리는 물결높은(소용돌이치는) 바다보다 더 감시를 필요로 합니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 바다보다 훨씬 더 반역적이기 때문입니다. 주님, 주님의 영광을 위하여 우리를 다스려 주소서.
