Evening
"The night also is thine"(Psalm 74:16).
Lord, You do not abdicate Your throne when the sun goes down, nor do You leave us all through these long wintry nights to be the prey of evil. Your eyes watch us as the stars, and Your arms surround us as the constellations in the sky. All the influences of the moon are in Your hand. This is very sweet to me when I am lying awake through the midnight hours or tossing to and fro in anguish. The night of affliction is as much under the control of the Lord of Love as the bright summer days when all is bliss. Jesus is in the tempest. His love wraps the night around itself as a mantle. The eye of faith can see through the robe to the love within. From early evening to the break of day, the eternal Watcher observes His saints and overrules the shades and dews of midnight for His people's highest good. We hear the voice of Jehovah saying, "I form the light, and create darkness ... I the Lord do all these things"(Isaiah 45:7). Gloomy seasons of spiritual indifference and sin are not exempted from the divine purpose. When the altars of truth are defiled and the ways of God forsaken, the Lord's servants weep with bitter sorrow. But they should not despair, for the darkest times are governed by the Lord, and they will soon come to their end. What may seem to be defeat to us may be victory to Him.

○ 요절: "낮도 주의 것이요 밤도 주의 것이라 주께서 빛과 해를 예비하셨으며."(시 74:16)
주여, 주님은 해가 져도 주님의 보좌에서 물러나지 아니하시고, 이 긴 겨울밤들 내내 우리 모두를 악의 먹이가 되도록 버려두시지 않습니다. 주님의 눈은 별들처럼 우리를 감찰하시고, 주님의 팔은 하늘에 있는 성좌(星座, 별자리)들처럼 우리를 둘러싸고 있습니다. 달의 모든 영향력도 주님의 손안에 있습니다. 이 말씀(시 74:16)은 내가 한밤중 내내 누운채 깨어 있을 때나 고뇌 중에 이리저리 뒤척이고 있을 때 나에게 매우 감미롭습니다(큰 위로가 됩니다).
고통의 밤도 모든 것이 행복으로 가득찬 여름날들처럼 사랑의 하나님의 지배(통제) 아래에 있습니다. 예수님은 대폭풍우 가운데도 계십니다. 그분의 사랑은 밤을 외투로 하여 자기 자신을 둘러쌉니다.
믿음의 눈은 그 검은 옷(the robe, 밤)을 꿰뚫어서 안에 있는 사랑까지 볼 수 있습니다. 영원한 감찰자(watcher)이신 하나님은 초저녁부터 새벽까지 그의 성도들을 감찰하시고 그의 백성의 최고의 유익을 위하여 밤중의 어둠과 이슬을 다스리십니다.
우리는 "나는 빛도 짓고 어두움도 창조하며 ..... 이 모든 일을 행하는 자니라."(사 45:7)라고 말씀하시는 여호와의 음성을 듣습니다.
영적 냉담과 죄가 판치는 침울한(희망없는) 때들도 하나님의 목적으로부터 제외(면제)되지 않습니다. 진리의 제단들이 오염되고 하나님의 길이 버려질 때, 여호와의 종들은 쓰라린 슬픔으로 눈물을 흘립니다. 그러나 그들은 절망해서는 안됩니다. 왜냐하면 가장 어두운 때일지라도 하나님에 의하여 다스려지고 있고, 그들(가장 어두운 때들)은 곧 종말을 맞을 것이기 때문입니다. 우리에게 패배인 것처럼 보이는 것이 하나님에게는 승리가 될 수 있습니다.
