Evening
"And there was no more sea"(Revelation 21:1).
We could hardly rejoice at the thought of losing the glorious old ocean. The new heavens and the new earth seem less attractive to our imagination if there is literally to be no great sea with its gleaming waves and sandy shores. A physical world without a sea would be an iron ring without the sapphire to make it precious. There must be a spiritual meaning here. In the new earth there will be no division. The sea separates nations and peoples from each other. To John on Patmos the deep waters were like prison walls, shutting him out from his brethren and his work. There will be no such barriers in the world to come. Leagues of rolling billows lie between us and many Christian brothers and sisters whom we prayerfully remember tonight. But in the next world, there will be unbroken fellowship for all the redeemed family. In this sense, there will be no more sea. The sea is the emblem of change. With its ebb and flows, its glassy smoothness and its mountainous billows, its gentle murmurs and its tumultuous roarings, it is never the same for long. Earth is constant only in her inconsistancy. But in the heavenly state all distressing change will be unknown along with all fear of storm to wreck our hopes and drown our joys. The sea of glass glows with a glory unbroken by a wave. No tempest howls along the peaceful shores of paradise. We will soon reach that happy land where separation, change, and storms will end! Jesus will take us there.

○ 요절: "또 내가 새 하늘과 새 땅을 보니 처음 하늘과 처음 땅이 없어졌고, 바다도 다시 있지 않더라,"(계 21:1)
우리는 영광스러운 옛 바다를 잃는다는 것을 생각할 때 거의 기뻐할 수 없을 것입니다(기뻐하지 않을 것입니다). 만일 문자 그대로 반짝거리는 바다의 파도와 모래가 깔린 해변이 있는 큰 바다가 없어질 것이라면, 우리가 상상컨대 새 하늘과 새 땅은 별로 매력이 없을 것 같습니다.
바다가 없는 자연계는 반지를 보배롭게 하는 사파이어(청옥)가 없는 철반지일 것입니다. 여기에는 깊은 영적 의미가 있음에 틀림없습니다. 새 땅에서는 분리(나눔)가 없을 것입니다. 자연계의 바다는 나라들과 사람들을 서로 갈라놓습니다. 밧모섬에 있던 요한에게 깊은 바다는 그로 하여금 그의 형제들을 못 만나게 하고 그의 사역을 못하도록 막아버리는 감옥의 벽과 같습니다.
장차 올 내세에서는 그런 장벽은 없을 것입니다. 오늘 저녁 우리와 우리가 기도하며 기억하는 많은 그리스도인 사이에는 계속 굽이치는 큰 파도 더미들이 놓여 있습니다. 그러나 다음 세상에는 구속받은 모든 가족을 위한 온전한 교제가 있을 것입니다. 이런 의미에서 더 이상 바다는 없습니다
바다는 변화의 상징입니다. 바다는 썰물과 밀물이 있고, 거울같이 잔잔하다가 산더미같은 파도들이 되고, 부드러운 물소리를 내며 찰랑거리다가도 격렬하게 포효(咆哮)하면서, 바다는 결코 오랫동안 같은 상태로 있지 않습니다. 이 세상(earth)은 무상(無常, 변덕스러운 것)하다는 점에서만 변함이 없습니다(즉 이 세상의 것들은 모두 무상(無常)하다는 것이 진리입니다).
그러나 천국에서는 고통을 주는 모든 변화(변덕)는 우리의 소망을 파멸시키고 우리의 기쁨을 익사시키는 폭풍에 대한 모든 두려움과 더불어 알려지지 않은 것입니다(즉 천국에는 변화와 두려움 같은 것은 없습니다).
천국의 유리바다는 어떤 파도에도 깨어지지 않는 영광으로 빛나고 있습니다. 평화로운 낙원의 해안을 따라 울부짖는 대폭풍도 없습니다. 우리는 곧 분리(나눔), 변화(무상), 그리고 폭풍이 끝날 행복한 땅에 도착할 것입니다! 예수님은 우리를 그곳에 데려가실 것입니다.
