Evening
"Be thou diligent to know the state of the flocks, and look well to thy herds"(Proverbs 27:23).
Every wise merchant will periodically update his accounts, examine his inventory, and discover whether his business is prospering or declining. Every man who is wise in the King- dom of heaven will cry, "Search me, O God, and know my heart"(Psalm 139:23). He will frequently set apart time for self-examination to discover whether things are right between God and his soul. The God whom we worship is a great heart-searcher. Make a diligent investigation of your spiritual condition lest you come short of the promised rest. Let the oldest saint look well to the fundamentals of his faith for gray heads may cover wicked hearts. Do not let the young Christian despise the word of warning for the greenness of youth may be joined to the rottenness of hypocrisy. The enemy continues to sow tares among the wheat. It is not my aim to introduce doubts and fears into your mind; but I hope that the rough wind of self-examination may help to drive them away. It is only carnal security that we want to kill; not confidence, but fleshly confidence which we would overthrow; not peace, but false peace which we would destroy. The precious blood of Christ was not shed to make you a hypocrite, but so that sincere souls might show forth His praise.

○ 요절: "네 양떼의 형편을 부지런히 살피며 네 소떼에 마음을 두라."(잠 27:23)
모든 지혜로운 상인은 주기적으로 그의 회계장부(계좌)를 새롭게 맞추어 놓고, 그의 재고를 조사하고, 그의 사업이 번창하고 있는지, 쇠퇴하고 있는 지를 확인합니다. 하늘나라에 속해 있는 지혜로운 사람은 모두 "하나님이여 나를 살피사 내 마음을 아옵소서."(시 139:23) 라고 외칠 것입니다.
지혜로운 사람은 하나님과 자신의 영혼간에 매사가 올바른지를 알기 위하여 자주 자기 반성의 시간을 따로 가질 것입니다. 우리가 경배하는 하나님은 위대한 심령 감찰자(마음을 살피시는 분)입니다. 그대는 약속된 안식에 못미치지 않도록 그대의 영적 상태의 조사를 부지런히 하십시오. 가장 연로한 성도라 할지라도 그의 믿음의 기초를 잘 살펴보게 하십시오. 왜냐하면 백발이 사악한 마음을 가리울 수 있기 때문입니다. 젊은 그리스도인으로 하여금 훈계의 말씀을 멸시하지 않도록 하십시오. 왜냐하면 젊은이의 미숙함이 위선의 부패(선으로 가장한 죄악)에 합류될지도 모르기 때문입니다. 원수는 계속 밀밭속에 가라지를 뿌리고 있습니다.
의심과 두려움을 그대의 마음에 도입하려는 것이, 나의 의도가 아니고, 나는 자기성찰이라는 센바람이 그것들(의심과 두려움)을 쫓아내는 것을 돕기를 바랍니다. 우리가 말살시키기를 원하는 것은 세속적 안전일 뿐입니다. 즉 우리가 타도하려는 것은 신뢰 자체가 아니라 육체적(인간적)인 신뢰입니다.
우리가 파멸시키려는 것은 평안 자체가 아니라 거짓 평안입니다. 그리스도의 보혈은 그대를 위선자로 만들기 위해서가 아니라 진실한 영혼들이 주님에 대한 찬양을 내보이도록 하기 위하여 흘려졌습니다
