We implore every Christian household to grant this fervent request first uttered by an apostle. A very heavy responsibility rests on all ministers of the gospel. As officers in Christ's army, they are the special targets of the enmity of men and devils. Their sacred calling involves temptations from which you are exempt. Above all, it too often draws them away from personal enjoyment of truth into a ministrial and official consideration of it. They observe very sad backslidings, and their hearts are wounded. They see millions perishing, and their spirits sink. They want to profit from their preaching. They desire to be a blessing to your children. They long to be useful both to saints and sinners. Therefore, dear friends, intercede for those in the ministry. You do not look to them but to the Master for spiritual blessings. Yet, how many times has He given those blessings through His ministers! Ask, then, again and again, that they may be the earthen vessels into which the Lord may put the treasures of the gospel. The whole company of missionaries, ministers, teachers, and students, in the name of Jesus, beseech you--"Brethren, pray for us."

우리는 모든 그리스도인의 가정에게 처음 한 사도가 말했던 이 열렬한 본문의 요구(살전5:25)를 들어주실 것을 간절히 부탁합니다. 매우 막중한 책임이 모든 복음의 사역자들의 어깨에 놓여 있습니다. 그리스도의 군대의 장교들로서 사역자(목회자)들은 사람들과 마귀들의 특별한 증오의 대상입니다. 그들의 거룩한 소명 속에는 그대들(평신도들)은 당하지 않을(즉 면제된) 유혹(시험)들도 포함되고 있습니다. 무엇보다도 이 소명은 사역자들로 하여금 진리의 개인적 향유(享有)보다 앞서 사역과 공적인 일에 더 치중(置重, consideration)케 하는 유혹에 너무 자주 빠지게 합니다.
목회자(사역자)들은 매우 가슴 아픈(슬픈) 신자들의 타락들을 보게 됩니다. 그래서 그들의 마음이 상처를 입습니다. 그들은 수많은 사람들이 멸망해 가는 것을 보며. 낙담합니다. 그들은 그들의 설교로 그대들에게 유익을 주기를 원합니다. 그들은 그대들의 자녀들에게 축복이 되기를 바랍니다. 그들은 성도들에게나 죄인들에게나 모두에게 유용한 존재가 되기를 소원합니다. 그러므로 사랑하는 친구들이여, 사역(목회등)을 하시는 분들을 위하여 중보 기도를 하여 주십시오. 그대들은 영적 축복을 받기 위하여 사역자를 바라보지 않고 주님을 바라보기도 합니다.
그러나 주님께서는 그런 축복들을 주님의 종들을 통하여 주시는 경우가 얼마나 많은지 모릅니다! 따라서 사역자들이, 주님께서 복음의 보화를 담을 수 있는 이 땅의 그릇들이 될 수 있도록 몇 번이고 기도해 주십시오. 전 세계의 모든 교사들, 목회자들, 말씀의 교사들, 말씀을 배우는 학생들 등, 우리 모두는 예수님의 이름으로 그대들에게 이렇게 간청합니다. "형제들이여, 우리를 위하여 기도해 주십시오"(역자주1)
