What enemies are abroad? What heresy must I guard against? Sins creep from their lurking-places when the darkness reigns. Our heavenly Protector foresees all the attacks which are about to be made on us. When Satan desires evil for us, He prays for us that our faith will not fail when we are sifted as wheat. What weather is coming for the Church? We must care for the Church with anxious love. Let us observe the signs of the times and prepare for conflict. "Watchman, what of the night?" What stars are visible? What precious promises suit our present case? You sound the alarm and give us the consolation, also. Christ, the polestar, is ever fixed in His place, and all the stars are secure in the right hand of their Lord. But, watchman, when comes the morning? The Bridegroom tarries. Are there no signs of His coming forth as the Sun of Righteousness? Has not the morning star arisen as the pledge of day? When will the day dawn and the shadows flee away? O Jesus, come in Spirit to my sighing heart and make it sing for joy.

요절 : "두마에 관한 경고라 사람이 세일에서 나를 부르되 파수꾼이여 밤이 어떻게 되었느뇨 파수꾼이여 밤이 어떻게 되었느뇨"(사21:11)
지금 어떤 원수들이 퍼져있습니까? 그럼 우리는 어떤 이단에 대하여 경계해야 합니까? 어둠이 지배할 때에는 죄들이 그 잠복 처(숨은 곳)에서 살금살금 기어 나오는 법입니다. 그러므로 나는 파수대(망루)에 올라가서 기도의 파수꾼이 되어야 합니다.(즉 기도의 불침번이 되어야 합니다.)
하늘에 계시는 우리의 보호자께서는 우리에게 막 가해지려는 모든 공격을 예견하고 계십니다. 사단이 우리에게 대한 악을 욕구할 때, 주께서는 우리가 밀처럼 까불려진다면 우리의 믿음이 떨어지지 않도록 우리를 위하여 기도하실 것입니다. 지금 교회의 기후예보는 어떻습니까?(즉 어떤 기후가 교회에 닥쳐올 것입니까?) 우리는 뜨거운 사랑으로 교회를 돌봐야 합니다. 우리는 시대의 징조들을 잘 살피며 악과의 싸움에 대한 준비를 철저히 해야 합니다. "파수꾼이여, 밤이 어떻게 되었느뇨?"(사21:11) 하늘엔 어떤 별이 보이는가? 어떤 소중한 약속(말씀)들이 현재의 우리의 경우에 적합한가?
주님은 우리에게 비상 경보도 울리시고 또 위로도 주시고 계십니다. 북극성이신 그리스도는 항상 그의 자리에 계시며 모든 별들은 그들의 주님의 오른편에 확실이 있습니다. 그러나 파수꾼이여, 그 아침은 언제 옵니까? 신랑은 지체하고 있습니다. 그가 의의 태양으로서 곧 오실 징조는 보이지 않습니까? 대낮이 올 것이라는 언약(보증)으로 새벽별이 떠오르지 않습니까? 그 날은 언제 밝아오며 그 어둠은 언제 물러날 것입니까?
오 예수님, 저의 사모하는 마음에 성령으로 들어 오십시오. 그리고 그것을 기쁨으로 노래하게 하여 주십시오.
