"Thou whom my soul loveth" (Song of Solomon 1: 7).
It is wonderful to be able to say of the Lord Jesus--"Thou whom my soul loveth." Many can only say they hope they love Him; they trust they love Him; but only a poor and shallow experience will be content to stay here. No one should give any rest to his spirit until he feels quite sure about this vitally important matter. We should not be satisfied with a superficial hope that Jesus loves us and with a bare trust that we love Him. The old saints spoke positively and plainly. Paul said, "I know whom I have believed" (2 Timothy 1: 12). "I know that my Redeemer liveth," said Job. Get positive knowledge of your love for Jesus. True love for Christ is the Holy Spirit's work in every case. He is the cause of it. Why do we love Jesus? Because He first loved us and gave himself for us. We have life through His death. We have peace through His blood. Though He was rich, for our sakes He became poor. Why do we love Jesus? Because of the excellency of His person. We are filled with a sense of His beauty! His greatness, goodness, and loveliness combine to enthrall the soul until it is so overcome with love that it exclaims, "Yea, He is altogether lovely." This is a blessed love--a love which binds the heart with chains softer than silk and firmer than stone!

요절 : "내 마음에 사랑하는 자야 너의 양떼 먹이는 곳과 오정에 쉬게 하는 곳을 내게 고하라 내가 네 동무 양떼 곁에서 어찌 얼굴을 가리운 자같이 되랴"(아1:7)
주 예수님에 대하여 "내 마음에 사랑하는 자(Thou whom my soul loveth)"라고 말할 수 있다면 그것은 참으로 훌륭합니다. 많은 사람들은 그들이 주님(예수님)을 사랑하기를 희망한다고 말할 수 있을 뿐입니다. 그러나 이것은 빈약하고 얕은 경험(신앙체험)의 수준에 머물러 있는 분들의 만족일 뿐입니다. 참으로 이런 중요한 문제에 관하여 확신을 느낄 때까지 누구도 자기 영혼에 안식을 줄 수 없습니다. 우리는 예수님이 나를 사랑하실 것이라는 피상적인 희망이나, 우리가 주님을 사랑한다는 속 빈 마음을 갖고 만족해서는 안됩니다. 옛 성도들은 명백히 말했습니다.
바울은 "나의 의뢰한 자를 내가 안다"고 말했습니다.(딤후1:12) 또 욥은 "내가 알기에는 나의 구속자가 살아 계시니"라고 말했습니다.(욥19:25) 그러므로 그대의 예수님에 대한 사랑을 확실히 아십시오.(확고한 지식을 가지십시오.) 물론 모든 경우에 있어서 그리스도에 대한 참사랑은 성령의 역사(役事)입니다. 우리가 왜 예수님을 사랑할까요? '왜냐하면 그가 먼저 우리를 사랑하셨고 우리를 위하여 그 자신을 내어 주셨기 때문입니다'(역자주1)
우리는 그의 죽으심을 통하여 생명을 얻습니다. 그리고 우리는 그의 피를 통하여 평안을 얻었습니다. 그는 본래 부유하셨지만 우리를 위하여 가난하게 되었습니다. 왜 우리는 예수님을 사랑합니까? 예수님의 인격(인품)의 탁월성 때문입니다. 우리는 주님을 생각할 때 그분의 아름다움이 온 마음에 가득하게 느껴집니다. 주님의 위대하심과 선하심과 사랑스러움이 조화(결합)되어 우리의 영혼을 황홀(매혹)하게 합니다.
그래서 우리 영혼은 주님의 황홀한 사랑으로 너무 압도되어, "그 전체가 사랑스럽구나"라고 외칩니다.(역자주2) 이 사랑은 참으로 복된 사랑입니다. 즉 실크(비단)보다 더 부드럽고 돌보다 더 단단한 사슬로 우리의 마음을 묶는 복된 사랑입니다.
