"In the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world" (Philippians 2: 15).
A Christian man should so shine in his life that a person could not live with him a week without knowing the gospel. His conversation should be such that all who are around him would clearly perceive whose he is and whom he serves. People should see the image of Jesus reflected in his daily actions. Lights are intended for guidance. We are to help those around us who are in the dark. We are to hold forth the Word of life to them. We are to pint sinners to the Savior and the weary to a divine resting place. Men sometimes read their Bibles and fail to understand them. We should be ready, like Philip, to instruct the inquirer in the meaning of God's Word, the way of salvation, and the life of godliness. Lights are also used for warning. Christian men should know that there are many false lights shininig everywhere in the world, and therefore the right light is needed. The wreckers of Satan are always abroad, tempting the ungodly to sin under the name of pleasure. They hoist the wrong light. It is our responsibility to put up the true light on every dangerous rock, to point out every sin, and tell what it leads to so we may be clear of the blood of all men. Lights also have a very cheering influence and so have Christians. A Christian ought to be a comforter with kind words on his lips and sympathy in his heart. He should carry sunshine wherever he goes and diffuse happiness around him.

그리스도인은 그의 삶에서 매우 뚜렷한 빛을 비추기 때문에 다른 사람이 복음을 모른채 그리스도인과 한 주일을 살 수 없을 것입니다.(즉 진실한 그리스도인은 믿지 않는 사람과 일주일만 살면 그의 생활의 빛으로 복음이 전해진다는 것입니다.) 그리스도인의 대화는 그 주변에 있는 모든 사람들이 그가 누구의 것이고 그가 누구를 섬기는가를 분명히 알 수 있을 만한 사람이 되어야 합니다. 사람들이 그리스도인의 매일 행동에서 비추어지는 예수님의 모습을 볼 수 있어야 합니다.[즉 그리스도인은 그의 행동들(생활)에 의하여 그리스도의 모습을 나타내야 합니다.]
빛은 인도를 위한 목적으로 있는 것입니다. 우리는 어둠 속에 있는 우리 주변의 사람들을 도와야 합니다. 또 우리는 그들에게 생명의 말씀을 제시해 주어야 합니다. 우리는 죄인들에게 구세주를 가르켜(지시)주어야 하고 피곤한 영혼들에게 하나님의 안식처를 지적해 주어야 합니다. 종종 사람들은 성경을 읽어도 성경을 잘 이해하지 못할 때가 있습니다. 따라서 우리는 빌립처럼(역자주1) 하나님의 말씀의 의미와 구원의 도와 경건한 생명에 관하여 묻는 사람들에게 언제든지 가르칠 준비가 되어 있어야 합니다.
빛은 또한 경고를 위하여 사용됩니다. 그리스도인들은 세상도처에서 비추고 있는, 많은 가짜(거짓) 불들이 있다는 것을 알아야 합니다. 그러므로 바른 빛이 필요합니다. 배를 난파시키는 사단의 하수인들은 즐거움(쾌락)이라는 미명아래 경건치 못한 자들을 죄짓도록 유혹하려고 도처에 항상 퍼져 있습니다. 그들은 가짜의(그릇된) 빛을 들어 올립니다. 우리는 모든 위험한 암초(바위)마다 참 빛을 올려서 모든 죄를 지적하고 죄(가짜의 빛)가 우리를 어디에로 인도하는지를 말해야 할 책임이 있습니다. 그래야 우리는 모든 사람의 피에 대하여 깨끗할 것입니다.
빛들은 또한 신명나는 마음을 주는 영향력을 갖고 있습니다. 바로 그리스도인이 그런 것을 갖고 있습니다. 모든 그리스도인은 그의 입술로는 친절한 말을 하고 그 마음에는 따뜻한 동정심을 갖는 위로자가되어야 합니다. 참으로 그리스도인은 그가 가는 곳마다 진리의 햇빛을 비추어야 하고 그 주위에 행복을 확산시켜야 합니다.
