"Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!" (Psalm 120: 5).
Even though you are a Christian, you have to live in the midst of an ungodly world, and it is of little us for you to cry, "Woe is me." Jesus did not pray that you would be taken out of the world. It is better to meet the difficulty in the Lord's strength and glorify Him in it. The enemy is always on the watch to detect inconsistency in your conduct; therefore, be very holy. Remember that the eyes os all are on you, and more is expected from you than from other men. Strive to give no occasion for blame. Let your goodness be the only fault they can discover in you. Seek to be useful as well as consistent. Perhaps you think, "If I were in a more favorable position, I might serve the Lord's cause; but I cannot do any good where I am." But the worse the people are among you, the more they need your example. If they are crooked, you should set them straight. If they are perverse, they need you to turn their proud heart to the truth. Where would the physicians be but where there are many sick? When you become weary of the strife and sin that meet you on every hand, remember that all the saints have endured the same trial. Some of them had to endanger their lives to the death, and you will not be crowned until you also have endured hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. Therefore, "stand fast in the faith; quit you like men; be strong" (1 Corinthians 16: 13).

비록 그대가 그리스도인 일지라도, 사악한(죄 많은) 세상 속에서 살아야 합니다. 그러므로 그대가 "내게 화로다"라고 부르짖어도 소용이 없습니다. 그래서 예수님은 그대를 세상에서 데려가 달라고 기도하시지 않았습니다.(역자주1) 그러므로 오리려 주님의 능력 안에서 고난을 겪으며, 그 속에서 주님을 영화롭게 하는 것이 더 나을 것입니다. 원수(사단)는 그대의 행동 속에서 모순(말씀에 어긋난 행동)을 발견하려고 항상 노리고(주시하고)있습니다.
그러므로 아주 거룩하게 사십시오. 모든 눈들이 그대 위에 있고, 다른 사람들보다 그대에게 기대가 더 크다는 것을 기억하십시오. 원수들에게 그대를 비난할 기회를 주지 않도록 노력하십시오. 그대의 선함이 그들이 그대 안에서 발견할 수 있는 유일한 결점(트집)이 되게 하십시오. 언행이 일치(일관성)할 뿐만 아니라 유용한 사람이 되십시오. 아마 그대는, "만일 내가 좀 더 유리한 자리에 있다면, 주님의 뜻을 잘 섬길텐데. 그러나 현재 내가 있는 곳에서는 어떤 선도 행할 수 없다"라고 생각할지 모릅니다. 그러나 그대가 살고 있는 곳의 사람들이 악하면 악할수록 그들은 그 만큼 더욱 더 그대의 선행의 모범을 요구합니다.
그들이 비뚤어져 있다면, 그들을 바로 세워야 합니다. 그들이 사악(괴퍅)하다면, 그들의 교만한 마음을 진리로 돌리기 위하여 그들에게는 그대가 필요합니다. 병이 많은 곳이 아니라면 의사들이 있을리가 있겠습니까?(즉 환자가 없는 곳에는 의사가 필요하지 않습니다.) 그대가 사방에서 마주치는 죄와 싸움으로 지칠 때, 지금까지 모든 성도들도 똑 같은 시련을 견디어 왔다는 것을 기억하십시오. 그들 중 어떤 분들은 그들의 생명의 위험을 무릅쓰고 죽기까지 싸웠습니다. 그러므로 그대도 예수 그리스도의 선한 군사로서 곤난을 참아야만 비로서 승리의 면류관을 쓸 것입니다. 따라서, "깨어 믿음에 굳게 서서 남자답게 강건하십시오.(고전16:13)
