It is well for us that, amidst all the variableness of life, there is One whom change cannot affect; One whose heart can never alter and on whose brow mutability can make no furrows. Everything else has changed. The sun itself grows dim with age. The world is growing old. The folding up of the wornout vesture has commenced. The heavens and earth must soon pass away. They will perish; but there is One who has immortality, and in whose person there is no change. The mariner feels delight when, after having been tossed about for many days, he steps again on the solid shore. This is like the satisfaction of a Christian, when, amidst all the changes of this troublesome life, he rests his foot on this truth--"I am the Lord, I change not." With God "is no variableness, neither shadow of turning" (James 1: 17). Whatever His attributes were of old, they are now. His power, wisdom, justice, and truth are all unchanged. He has always been the refuge of His people and their stronghold in the day of trouble. He is their sure helper still. He is unchanged in His love. He has loved His people with an everlasting love, and He loves them now as much as He ever did. Precious is the assurance that He changes not!
인생의 모든 변화 중에서도 변화가 영향할 수 없는 분, 그분의 마음이 절대로 변할 수 없고, 세월의 변화무상이 그분의 이마에 주름살을 만들 수 없는 분(즉 하나님)이 계시다는 것은 우리에게 큰 행복입니다. 그분 외의 모든 것은 변해 왔습니다. 태양 자체도 세월과 함께 퇴색(희미)해 가고 있습니다. 세상도 나이를 먹고 있습니다.(즉 우주도 늙어가고 있습니다.) 낡은 옷처럼 세상은 삭기 시작했습니다. 하늘과 땅도 곧 사라질 것입니다.(역자주1)
천지(天地)는 멸망할 것이나, 불멸성을 갖고 계시고 그의 성품(인격)이 변함이 없으신 분(하나님)이 계십니다. 여러 날 동안 파도에 뒹굴린 선원(뱃사공)이 단단한 해안(육지)에 다시 발을 디딜 때 큰 기쁨을 느낄 것입니다. 이것은, 이 힘든 인생살이의 모든 변화 중에서 "하나님은 변함도 없으시고 회전하는 그림자도 없으시니라"(약1:17)라는 말씀과 함께 "나 여호와는 변역지 아니한다."(말3:6)라는 이 진리의 말씀 위에 발을 딛고 있는 그리스도인의 만족과 같습니다. 옛적에 갖고 계셨든 하나님의 모든 속성은 무엇이든지 간에 하나님은 그 속성들을 지금도 그대로 갖고 계십니다.
그의 능력, 그의 지혜, 그의 공의, 그의 진리는 모두 변함이 없습니다. 하나님은 언제나 그의 백성의 피난처이고, 환난의 날의 성채(요새)였습니다. 하나님은 지금도 여전히 그의 백성들의 확실한 후원자(조력자)이 십니다. 하나님은 그의 사랑도 변함이 없으십니다. 하나님은 그의 백성들을 영원한 사랑으로 사랑하셨습니다. 그리고 지금도 하나님은 그의 백성에 대하여 이제껏 하셨던 대로의 사랑을 계속하고 계십니다. 하나님은 변치(변역지) 않으신다는 확신은 참으로 소중합니다.
