"I will cut off them that worship and that swear by the Lord, and that swear by Malcham" (Zephaniah 1: 5).
Such persons thought themselves save because they were with both parties. They went with the followers of Jehovah and bowed at the same time to Malcham. But duplicity is abominable with God. In the common matters of daily life, a double-minded man is despised, but in Christinity he is loathsome to the last degree. The penalty pronounced in the verse before us is terrible, but it is well-deserved. How could divine justice spare the sinner, who knows the right, approves it, professes to follow it, and all the while loves evil and gives it dominon in his heart? My soul, search yourself this morning and see whether you are guilty of double-dealing. You profess to be a follower of Jesus--do you truly love Him? Is your heart right with God? To have one foot on the land of truth and another on the sea of falsehood will involve a terrible fall and a total ruin. Christ will be all or nothing. God fills the whole universe; therefore, there is no room for another god. If He reigns in your heart, there will be no space for another reigning power. Do you rest alone on Jesus and live for Him alone? Is it your desire to do so? If so, blessed be the mighty grace which has led you to salvation. If not so, O Lord, pardon this sad offense.

제목 : 멸절하리라
요절 : "무릇 지붕에서 하늘의 일월성신에게 경배하는 자와 경배하며 여호와께 맹세하면서 말감을 가리켜 맹세하는 자를 멸절하리라"(습1:5-6)
그런 사람들은 그들이 양쪽 신들(both parties)을 다 섬기기 때문에 그들 자신이 안전하리라고 생각했습니다. 그들은 여호와의 신봉자이면서 동시에 말감(Malcham, 암몬인의 신)에게 절했습니다. 그러나 이런 이중성을 하나님은 참으로 싫어 하십니다. 우리의 보통의 일상사에서도 두 마음을 가진 자는 멸시를 받습니다. 그러나 기독교에 있어서는 그런 사람은 극도로 혐오스러운 (메스꺼운) 사람입니다. 우리 앞에 있는 성경절(습1:5-6)에 선언된 형벌은 참으로 무섭습니다. 그러나 그것은 마땅히 받을 벌입니다. 옳은 것을 알고, 그것을 인정하며, 또 그것을 따르겠다고 고백하면서 동시에 줄곧 악을 사랑하며 악에게 그 마음의 지배권을 넘겨준 죄인을 하나님의 공의가 어떻게 용서하실 수 있겠습니까?
나의 영혼이여, 오늘 아침 네 자신을 살펴보라. 그리고 네가 이중 섬김의 죄를 범하고 있는지를 생각해보라.
그대는 예수님의 제자(신봉자)라고 고백하고 있습니다. 그런데 그대는 진실로 주님을 사랑합니까? 그대의 마음은 하나님께 바로 서 있습니까? 한발은 진리의 땅을 밟고 다른 발은 거짓의 바다를 밟고 있다면 이것은 무서운 추락과 완전한 파멸을 의미합니다. 참으로 그리스도는 전부(全部)가 아니면 전무(全無)입니다.(즉 그리스도는 우리의 모든 것이 되시든가 아니면 아무것도 되시지 않을 것입니다.)
하나님은 온 우주를 채우고 계십니다.
그러므로 이 우주에는 다른 신이 존재할 여지가 없습니다. 따라서 하나님이 그대의 마음을 통치(지배)하고 계신다면, 그대의 마음에는 다른 통치세력을 위한 자리가 있을 수 없습니다. 과연 그대는 예수님만 의지하고, 그분만을 위하여 살고 있습니까? 그렇게 하는 것이 그대의 소원입니까? 그렇다면 그대를 구원으로 인도한 그 강한 능력의 은혜가 참으로 그대에게 축복이 됩니다. 그러나 만일 그렇지 않다면, 오 주여, 이 슬픈 죄를 용서하여 주소서.
