"Thou hast made summer and winter" (Psalm 74: 17).
My soul, begin this wintry month with your God. The cold snows and the piercing winds all remind you that He keeps His covenant with day and night. You can be assured that He will also keep that glorious covenant which He has made with you in the person of Jesus Christ. He who is true to His Word in the revolutions of the seasons of this poor, sin-polluted world will not prove unfaithful in His dealings with His own well-beloved Son. Winter in the soul is by no means a comfortable season. If it is on you just now, it will be very painful to you. But there is this comfort, namely, that the Lord allows it. He is the great Winter King and rules in the realms of frost. Our circumstances come to us with wise design. Frosts kill noxious insects and put a stop to raging diseases. They break up the clods and sweeten the soil. Oh, that such good results would always follow our winters of affliction! How we prize the fire just now! How pleasant is its cheerful glow! Let us prize our Lord in the same manner, who is the constant source of warmth and comfort in every time of trouble. Let us draw near to Him and find joy and peace in believing. Let us wrap ourselves in the warm garments of His promises and go forth to labors which fit the season.

요절 : "땅의 경계를 정하시며 여름과 겨울을 이루셨나이다"(시74:17)
나의 영혼아, 이 추운 겨울 달을 너의 하나님과 함께 시작하라. 차가운 눈과 살을 에는(찢는) 바람은 모두 하나님께서 밤낮으로 그의 언약을 지키시고 계신다는 것을 너에게 상기시켜 주시는구나.
그대는 주께서 또한 예수 그리스도의 인격 안에서 그대와 맺은 은혜로운 언약을 지키실 것을 확신할 수 있습니다. 이 초라하고 죄로 물든 세상에 사계절의 순환을 정하신(시74:17) 그의 말씀을 변함없이 지키시는 하나님께서 그의 아주 사랑하시는 아들을 대우함에 있어서도 신실하지 않을 수 없을 것입니다.(역자주1) 영혼의 겨울은 결코 마음이 편안한 계절이 아닙니다. 만일 지금 그대가 그런 상황에 있다면 그대는 매우 고통스러울 것입니다. 그러나 이런 위로가 있습니다. 즉 주님께서 그것을 허락하셨다는 사실입니다. 주님은 위대한 겨울 왕으로서 서리의 영역을 지배하십니다. 우리의 모든 상황(환경조건들)은 주님의 지혜로운 설계에 의하여 우리에게 옵니다. 서리는 유해한 곤충들(해충들)을 죽이고 창궐하는 질병들을 멈추게 합니다. 또 서리는 단단한 흙덩이를 부수어 토양을 부드럽게 합니다.
오, 우리의 고난의 겨울은 그런 좋은 결과를 따라오게 합니다. 지금 우리는 불을 얼마나 소중히 여깁니까! 그 신나게 타오르는 불길(작열)은 얼마나 우리를 즐겁게 합니까! 그와 같이 우리 하나님도 소중히 여깁시다. 하나님은 모든 환난의 때에 온정(따뜻함)과 위로의 끊임없는 원천이십니다. 하나님께 더 가까이 나아가서 믿음 안에서 기쁨과 평강을 발견합시다. 하나님의 약속이란 따뜻한 옷을 두르고(입고) 이 계절(겨울)에 알 맞는 일을 하러 나갑시다.
주1 해설 : 사계절의 순환의 법칙이 변하지 않듯이 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도 안에서 약속하신 하나님의 약속의 말씀도 절대로 변할 수 없다.
