"Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered" (Hebrews 5: 8).
The Captain of our salvation was made perfect through suffering. Therefore, we who are sinful and far from being perfect must not wonder if we are called to pass through suffering too. Will the head be crowned with thorns, and will the other members of the body be rocked on the dainty lap of ease? Must Christ pass through seas of His own blood to win the crown, and are we to walk to heaven in silver slippers? No, out Master's experience teaches us that suffering is necessary. But there is one very comforting thought in the fact of Christ's "being made perfect through suffering." It is that He can have complete sympathy with us. He is not a high priest who cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities. In this sympathy of Christ, we find a sustaining power. Believer, lay hold of this thought in all times of agony. Let the thought of Jesus strengthen you as you follow in His steps. Find a sweet support in His sympathy. Remember that to suffer is an honorable thing. To suffer for Christ is glory. The apostles rejoiced that they were counted worthy to do this. The Lord will give us grace to suffer for and with Christ. The jewels of a Christian are his afflictions. The regalia of the kings whom God has anointed are their troubles, their sorrows, and their griefs. "If we suffer, we shall also reign with him" (2 Timothy 2: 12).

우리의 구원의 대장이신 예수 그리스도는 고난을 겪으심으로써 온전하게 되셨습니다. 그러므로 죄 많고, 온전과는 거리가 먼(매우 불 완전한) 우리들이 또한 고난을 통과하도록 부름 받았다 해도 그것은 조금도 이상한 일이 아닙니다. 머리는 가시관을 쓰고 고통하는데 몸의 다른 지체는 화사한 회전의자 위에서 평안히 흔들거리고 있겠습니까?

하나님이 기름부은 왕들의 면류관은 그들의 환난과 슬픔과 불행의 보석들로 꾸며진 것입니다. "우리가 고난을 받으면 우리도 또한 그와 함께 왕 노릇 하리라."(딤후2:12)(역자주2)
