"The place which is called Calvary" (Luke 23: 33).
The hill of comfort is the hill of Calvary; the house of consolation is built with the word of the cross; the temple of heavenly blessing is founded on the riven rock--riven by the spear which pierced His side. No scene in sacred history ever gladdens the soul like Calvary's tragedy. Light springs from the midday-midnight of Golgotha, and every herb of the field blooms sweetly beneath the shadow of the once accursed tree. In that place of thirst, grace has dug a fountain which ever gushes with waters pure as crystal, each drop capable of alleviating the woes of mankind. You who have had your seasons of conflict will confess that it was not at Olivet that you found comfort, not on the hill of Sinai, nor on Tabor; but Gethsemane, Gabbatha, and Golgotha have been a means of comfort to you. The bitter herbs of Gethsemane have often taken away the bitterness of your life; the scourge of Gabbatha has often scourged away your cares, and the groans of Calvary put all other groans to flight. Thus Calvary yields us comfort rare and rich. We never would have known Christ's love in all its heights and depths if He had not died. We could not guess the Father's deep affection if He had not given His Son to die.

요절 : "해골이라 하는 곳에 이르러 거기서 예수를 십자가에 못 박고 두 행악자도 그렇게 하니 하나는 우편에 하나는 좌편에 있더라."(눅23:33)
진실로 갈보리 언덕은 위로의 언덕입니다. 그 위로의 집은 십자가의 나무로 지어 졌습니다. 천국의 축복을 주시는 집인 성전은 예수님의 옆구리를 찔렀던 창에 의하여 찢긴 그 바위(반석)위에 세워졌습니다. 성경에 기록된 역사상(聖史上)갈보리의 비극 같이 영혼을 기쁘게 하는 장면은 없습니다.
대낮에 온 땅에 어둠이 덮었던 갈보리(골고다)로부터 빛이 비추어옵니다.(역자주1) 한 때 저주 받았든 그 나무(십자가)의 그늘 아래의 들판엔 모든 약초들이 아름다운 꽃을 피우고 있습니다. 그 목 마른 땅(갈증의 장소)에 하나님께서 은혜로 물방울마다 인간의 고통(비애)을 덜어주는, 수정 같은 맑은(깨끗한)물을 뿜어주는 한 샘을 파 주었습니다. 그대가 어려운 투쟁의 시절을 겪었다면, 그대가 참으로 위로를 발견한 곳은 감람산이나. 시내산이나 다볼산에서가 아니라 겟세마네와 가바다와 골고다에서 하나님께서 그대에게 주신 위로의 방법을 발견하였다는 것을 고백할 것입니다. 즉 겟세마네의 쓴 약초들이 그대의 인생의 신고(辛苦, 고생)를 거둬갔으며, 가바다의 채찍이 그대의 근심을 채찍질로 가끔 쫓아냈습니다. 그리고 갈보리 십자가의 신음소리가 다른 모든 인생의 신음을 패주(敗走)시킵니다.(날려버립니다.) 그러므로 갈보리는 진기하고 풍성한 위로를 우리에게 주십니다. 만일 그리스도께서 죽지 않으셨다면 우리는 그리스도의 사랑의 높이와 깊이를 전연 몰랐을 것입니다. 그리고 하나님 아버지께서 그의 아들을 죽이시기 위하여 내어 주시지 않았다면 우리는 하나님 아버지의 그 깊은 사랑을 생각(짐작)할 수 없을 것입니다.
