"That through death he might destroy him that had the power of death" (Hebrew 2: 14).
Child of God, cease to fear dying. Living near the cross of Calvary you may think of death with pleasure. Welcome it when it comes with intense delight. It is sweet to die in the Lord. It is a covenant-blessing to sleep in Jesus. Death is no longer banishment. It is a return from exile, a going home to the many mansions where the loved ones already dwell. The distance between glorified spirits in heaven and militant saints on earth seems great, but it is not so. We are not far from home--a moment will bring us there. How long will that soul be tossed on the waves before it comes to that sea which knows no storm? Listen to the answer: "Absent from the body, present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5: 8). Like that ship of old, on the lake of Galilee, a storm had tossed it; but Jesus said, "Peace, be still," and immediately it came to the land. Do not think that a long period intervenes between the instant of death and the eternity of glory. When the eyes close on earth, they open in heaven. Child of God, what is there for ou to fear in death, seeing that through the death of your Lord its curse and sting are destroyed? It is a Jacob's ladder whose foot is in the dark grave, but its top reaches to glory everlasting!

하나님의 자녀여, 죽음을 두려워 마십시오. 그대가 갈보리의 십자가 근처에 산다면(즉 예수 그리스도의 십자가 신앙을 갖고 산다면) 그대는 죽음도 기쁘게 생각할 수 있습니다. 그러므로 죽음이 올 때 그대는 오히려 그것을 큰 기쁨으로 맞이하십시오.(환영하십시오) 주안에서 죽는 것은 즐겁습니다. 주안에서 잠드는 것(죽는 것)은 언약의 축복입니다.(역자주1)
사망은 이제 더 이상 유형(流刑, 돌아올 수 없는 형벌)이 아닙니다. 그것은 방랑지(유배지, 이 세상의 뜻)에서 사랑하는 사람들이 이미 먼저 가서 많이 살고 있는 처소에로 가는 귀가(歸家)의 길입니다. 이미 영화되어 있는 천국의 영혼들(먼저 이 세상을 떠난 성도들)과 이 땅에서 아직도 악의 세력과 싸우고 있는 성도들(이 세상에 아직 살아 있는 성도들)과의 거리(차이)는 매우 큰 것같이 보이지만(생각되지만) 사실은 그렇지 않습니다.(똑 같습니다) 우리도 지금 본향(천국)에서 그리 멀리 있지 않습니다. 잠시 후면 우리도 그곳에 이를 것입니다. 그 영혼(천국으로 가는 영혼)이 폭풍우가 없는 바다(천국)에 이르기까지 얼마나 오랫동안 이세상의 고난의 파도에 시달려야 할까요? 대답을 들으십시오. "몸을 떠나면 곧 주님과 함께 합니다."(고후5:8)
마치 옛적에 갈릴리호수 위에서 폭풍우에 시달렸던 배처럼; 그때 예수님께서는 바람을 꾸짖으시며 바다더러 이르시되, "잠잠하라 고요하라"고하셨습니다.(역자주2) 곧 바람이 그치고 아주 잔잔하여 졌습니다. 그리고 그 배는 곧(즉시) 육지에 이르렀습니다. 그러므로 죽음의 순간과 하늘나라의 영원한 영광사이에 오랜 기간(간격)이 있다고 생각하지 마십시오.(즉 우리의 죽음은 바로 영원한 영광의 문에 이르게 합니다.) 우리가 이 땅에서 눈을 감을 때 바로 하늘이 열립니다.(즉 곧 하늘에서 눈을 뜹니다.)
하나님의 자녀여, 주님의 죽음에 의하여 사망의 저주와 쏘는 것이 이미 파멸되었음을 알면서, 무엇 때문에 그대가 사망을 두려워할 것입니까?(역자주3) 사망(죽음)은 야곱의 사다리입니다. 그 발은 어두운 무덤 속에 박혀 있지만 그 꼭대기는 영원한 영광에 닿아 있습니다.(역자주4)
