"He that was healed wist not who it was" (John 5: 13).
Years are short to the happy and healthy, but thirty-eight years of disease must have dragged into a long time for the poor, impotent man. When Jesus healed him by a word while he lay at the pool of Bethesda, he was delightfully aware of a change. Likewise, the sinner who has been paralyzed with despair is very conscious of the change when the Lord Jesus speaks the word of power and gives joy and peace in believing. The evil removed is too great to be removed without our discerning it. The change brought about is too marvelous not to be noticed. Yet, the poor man was ignorant of the Author of his cure. He did not know the sacredness of His person on the errand which brought Him among men. We must not hastily condemn men for lack of knowledge. Where we can see the faith which saves the soul, we must believe that salvation has been bestowed. The Holy Spirit makes men penitent long before He makes them divine. Ignorance is, however, an evil. This poor man was tantalized by the Pharisees and was unable to cope with them. It is good to be able to answer opposition, but we cannot do so if we do not know the Lord Jesus clearly and with understanding. His ignorance, however, was soon cured when he was visited by the Lord in the temple. After that gracious manifestation, he was found testifying that it was Jesus who had made him whole.

요절 : "고침을 받은 사람이 그가 누구신지 알지 못하니 이는 거기 사람이 많으므로 예수께서 이미 피하셨음이라"(요5:13)
행복하고 건강한 사람들에게는 세월이 금새 지나갑니다.(짧습니다.) 그러나 베데스다 연못가에 있었던 그 가난하고 허약(무력)했던 사람에게는 38년의 병자(病者)의 세월은 참으로 너무도 더디게 질질 끌려온 지루한 시간이었음에 틀림없었습니다.(즉 그 환자에게는 38년이 너무도 긴 세월이었을 것입니다.) 베데스다 연못에 누워있는 병자를 예수님께서 한 말씀으로 고쳐주었을 때 그는 자기 몸의 변화를 매우 유쾌하게 느꼈습니다. 마찬가지로 절망에 빠져 꼼짝 못하는(마비된 사람처럼)죄인들도 주 예수님께서 능력의 말씀으로 기쁨과 평안을 주실 때 믿음 안에서 바로 자신의 변화를 의식합니다. 즉 그런 악은 너무(매우)커서 우리들이 그 변화를 알아차리지 못한 채(통찰함 없이)제거될 수 없습니다. 우리에게 일어난 그 변화는 우리가 알아차리지 못하기엔 너무도 놀라운 변화입니다.
그러나 그 불상한 사람(38년간의 병자)은 자기를 치료해주신 분(창조주 예수님)을 몰랐습니다. 그 사람은 예수님이 세상의 사람들 중에, 하나님의 사명(the errand)을 위하여 오신 그 신성한 인격자(성자, 하나님의 독생자, 구세주)임을 알지 못했습니다. 그러나 우리는 사람들이 본문의 병자처럼 예수님을 잘 모른다는 이유로 조급하게 정죄 하지 말아야 합니다. 영혼을 구원하는 믿음을 볼 수 있는 곳에서는 구원이 베풀어 졌다는 것을 반드시 믿어야 합니다.(본문의 병자의 경우가 그렇습니다.) 성령께서는 사람들을 신성한자(거룩한 자)로 만들기 오래 전에 그들을 회개하게 하십니다. 그러나 무지는 악(惡)입니다. 이 불상한 사람(38년간의 병자)은 바리새인(유대인)들에 의하여 괴롭힘을 당하였으나 그분이 누구인지 몰라 그들에게 대처(대응)를 잘할 수 없었습니다.(역자주1)
이런 경우 반론의 답변을 할 수 있는 것은 좋은 것입니다. 그러나 주 예수님을 분명히 알고 이해하지 못하면 그렇게 할 수 없습니다. 그러나 그의 무지는 그 후 성전에서 주님이 찾아 주셨을 때 곧 치료되었습니다.(주님을 알게 되었습니다.)(역자주2) 그 사람이 그때 성전에서 일러주신 은혜로운 주님의 말씀을 받고서,(요5:14) 그는 자기를 온전케 한 분은 예수였다고 증거하였습니다.
