"The ill-favoured and lean-fleshed kine did eat up the seven well-favoured and fat kine" (Genesis 41: 4).
Pharaoh's dream has too often been my waking experience. My days of sloth have ruinously destroyed all that I had achieved in times of zealous industry. My seasons of coldness have frozen all the genial glow of my periods of fervency and enthusiasm. My fits of worldliness have thrown me back from my advances in the divine life. I need to beware of lean prayers, lean praises, lean duties, and lean experiences, for these will eat up the fat of my comfort and peace. If I neglect prayer for a short time, I lose all the spirituality to which I had attained. If I draw no fresh supplies from heaven, the old corn in my granary is soon consumed by the famine which rages in my soul. How anxious I am to have no lean-fleshed days, no ill-favored hours! If every day I journeyed toward the goal of my desires I would soon reach it, but backsliding leaves me still far off from the prize of my high calling and robs me of the advances which I had so laboriously made. The only way in which all my days can be like the healthy cattle is to feed in the right meadow and to spend time with the Lord in His service, in His company, in His fear, and in His way. Why wouldn't every year be richer than the past, in love, usefulness, and joy? I have had more experience of my Lord and should be more like Him. O Lord, keep the curse of leanness of soul far from me.

"그 흉악하고 파리한 소가 그 아름답고 살진 일곱 소를 먹은 지라" (창 41: 4).
바로의 꿈은 아주 자주 나에게 각성의 경험이 되어왔습니다. 내가 게을렀던 나날이 열정적으로 근면했던 때에 성취했던 것을 모두 다 비참하게 파괴했습니다. 내가 차가왔던 계절이 내 열의와 열정의 시기가 지녔던 모든 유쾌한 활기를 얼려버렸습니다. 발작적으로 나타난 내 세속적인 삶이 거룩한 삶에서 이루었던 발전으로부터 나를 퇴보시켰습니다. 나는 파리한 (약한) 기도, 파리한 찬양, 파리한 의무, 파리한 경험을 조심해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 이런 것들은 내 편안과 평화의 풍성한 삶(the fat)을 먹어치울 것이기 때문입니다. 잠시 동안 기도를 게을리 하면 나는 내가 달성한 모든 영성(靈性)을 잃어버리게 됩니다. 천국으로부터 새로이 공급을 받지 않으면 내 곳간의 묵은 곡식은 내 영혼 안에서 기승을 부리는 가뭄에 의해 곧 소비되고 맙니다. 나에게 파리한 날과 흉악한 시간이 하나도 없기를 나는 얼마나 바라는가! 매일 내가 바라는 목표를 향하여 여행한다면 나는 곧 그곳에 도달할 것입니다. 그러나 뒷걸음치는 것은 내 고상한 소명의 목표로부터 나를 여전히 멀리 떨어져 있게 하며 내가 너무도 힘들게 이루었던 진전을 빼앗아가 버립니다. 내 모든 나날이 건강한 소와 같을 수 있는 유일한 길은 알맞은 풀밭에서 풀을 먹고 주님께 봉사하고 주님과 동행하고 주님을 경외하고 주님의 길을 가면서 그분과 시간을 보내는 것입니다. 매(每) 해가 사랑과 유용함과 기쁨에서 과거보다 더 풍요롭지 않을 이유가 어디 있겠습니까? 나는 내 주님을 더 많이 경험했고 더 그분을 닮게 될 것입니다. 오 주님, 영혼이 파리해지는 저주가 나에게서 늘 멀리 있도록 해주소서.
