"We love him because he first loved us" (1 John 4: 19).
There is no light in the planet but that which proceeds from the sun, and there is no true love for Jesus in the heart but that which comes from the Lord Jesus Himself. From this overflowing fountain of the infinite love of God, all our love for God springs. This is a certain trugh, that we love Him for no other reason than because He first loved us. Our love for Him is the fair offspring of His love for us. Anyone may have cold admiration when studying the works of God. The warmth of love can only be kindled in the heart by God's Spirit. How marvelous that when we had rebelled against Him, He would by a display of such amazing love, seek to draw us back. We would never have had a grain of love toward God unless it had been sown in us by the sweet seed of His love for us. Love, then, has for its parent the love of God shed abroad in the heart; but after it is divinely born, it must be divinely nourished. Love is not a plant which will flourish naturally in human soil. It must be watered from above. Love for Jesus is a flower of delicate nature. If it received no nourishment but that which could be drawn from the rock of our hearts, it would soon wither. As love comes from heaven, so it must feed on heavenly bread. It cannot exist in the wilderness unless it is fed by manna from on high. Love must feed on love. The very soul and life of our love for God is His love for us.

요절 : "우리가 사랑함은 그가 먼저 우리를 사랑하셨음이라"(요일4:19)
이 지구(유성)에는 태양에서 오는 빛 외에는 빛이 없습니다. 그리고 주 예수님 자신에서 오는 사랑 외에, 우리들의 마음속에는 예수님을 위한 참 사랑이 없습니다. 하나님을 향한 우리의 모든 사랑은 이 넘쳐흐르는 하나님의 무한한 사랑의 샘에서 솟아오릅니다. 우리가 하나님을 사랑하는 것은 하나님이 먼저 우리를 사랑하셨기 때문이며 그 외에 다른 어떤 이유도 없는 확실한 진실입니다. 하나님을 향한 우리의 사랑은 우리를 향한 그의 사랑의 아름다운 결실(소산)입니다. 어떤 사람은 하나님의 하신 역사들을 연구하면서 냉랭한 존경심은 품을 수 있습니다. 그러나 하나님에 대한 따뜻한 사랑은 오직 하나님의 영에 의하여 그 마음속에 사랑의 불이 켜질 때만 가능합니다. 우리가 아직 주님을 대적하고 있었을 때 주님은 그런 놀라운 사랑을 나타내심으로써 우리를 주님께로 이끄셨다니 얼마나 경이로운 일입니까! 우리를 향한 그의 달콤한 사랑의 씨앗이 우리 안에 심겨 지지 않았다면 우리는 하나님을 향한 한 알갱이의 사랑도 갖지 못했을 것입니다.
그러므로 사랑은 그 원천이 외부에서 우리의 마음으로 들어온 하나님의 사랑입니다. 그러나 그 사랑은 하나님으로부터 생겨난 후 또 하나님의 힘으로 양육되어야 합니다. 사랑은 인간 토양에서 저절로 자라는 식물이 아닙니다. 그 사랑은 위에서(하나님께서) 물을 부어 주어야 합니다. 예수님을 향한 사랑은 매우 정교성(섬세한 아름다움)을 갖고 있는 꽃입니다. 사랑은 우리의 마음의 반석에서 나올 수 있는 양분 외의 다른 양분을 받지 못한다면 곧 시들어 버릴 것입니다.
사랑은 하늘에서 오기 때문에 하늘의 떡(음식)을 먹고 살아야 합니다. 사랑은 하늘(위)로부터 오는 만나에 의하여 먹여지지 않는 한 이 광야 같은 세상에서 존속할 수 없습니다. 사랑은 사랑을 먹고 살아야 합니다. 하나님을 향한 우리의 사랑의 혼과 생명은 바로 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑입니다.
