Sanctification begins in regeneration. The Spirit of God infuses into man that new living principle by which he becomes a new creature in Christ Jesus. This work, which begins in the new birth, is carried on in two ways: mortification, where the lusts of the flesh are subdued and kept under; and vivification, by which the life which God has put within us is made a well of water springing up to everlasting life. This is carried on every day in what is called perseverance, by which the Christian is preserved and continued in a gracious state and is made to abound in good works to the praise and glory of God. While the Spirit of God is the author of sanctification, there is a visible agency employed which must not be forgotten. "Sanctify them," said Jesus, "through thy truth. Thy word is truth" (John 17: 17). Many passages of Scripture prove that the instrument of our sanctification is the Word of God. The Spirit of God brings to our minds the precepts and doctrines of truth and applies them with power. These are heard in the ear but received in the heart. They work in us to will and to do of God's good pleasure. The Word is the sanctifier. If we do not hear or read the truth, we will not grow in sanctification. "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119: 105).

성화(聖化)는 중생할 때부터 시작됩니다. 하나님의 영이 성도가 예수그리스도 안에서 새로운 피조물이 되게 하는 '새 생명의 원리'를 사람 속에 부어 주십니다.(역자주1) 중생(새로운 탄생)때 시작되는 이 사역(使役)은 두 가지 방식으로 계속됩니다.
(그 하나는) 금욕(禁慾, 절제)입니다.(역자주2) 고행은 육체의 정욕을 복종시키고 억제합니다. (그 둘은) 활력(活力, vivification)입니다. 이에 의하여 하나님께서 우리 안에 두신 생명이 영생하도록 솟아오르는 샘물이 되게 하십니다. 이것은 소위 인내 속에서 매일 매일 계속 수행됩니다. 인내에 의하여 그리스도인은 은혜로운 상태로 계속보존됩니다. 그리고 하나님께 영광과 찬송이 되는 선한 역사를 풍성히 하게 됩니다. 하나님의 영은 성화의(보이지 않는) 주인공이지만, 또 절대 잊어서는 안되는 가시적(눈에 보이는)대리자로 하나님에 의하여 쓰이는 하나님의 말씀(성경의 말씀)이 있습니다.

성경의 많은 구절들은, 우리의 성화의 도구(수단)는 하나님의 말씀이라는 것을 입증해 주고 있습니다. 하나님의 영은 진리의 교훈과 교리를 우리의 마음 속에 넣으시고, 이들(성경 구절들)을 능력 있게 적용하십니다. 이들 말씀들은 귀로 듣고, 마음으로 받습니다. 이들은 우리 안에서 우리가 하나님의 선하고 기쁘신 뜻을 소원하고 행하도록 역사하십니다. 즉 말씀이 우리의 성화자입니다. 우리가 진리를 듣지 못하거나 읽지 않는다면 우리의 성화는 잘 자라지 않을 것입니다. "주의 말씀은 내 발의 등이요 내 길에 빛이니이다"(시119:105)
