"Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love" (Jeremiah 31: 3).
The Holy Spirit is often pleased to witness with our spirits of the love of Jesus. He takes of the things of Christ and reveals them to us. No voice is heard from the clouds, and no vision is seen in the night; but we have a testimony more sure than either of these. If an angel should fly from heaven and inform the saint personally of the Savior's love to him, the evidence would not be one bit more satisfactory than that which is borne in the heart by the Holy Spirit. Ask those of the Lord's people who have lived the nearest to the gates of heaven, and they will tell you that they have had seasons when the love of Christ toward them has been a fact so clear and sure that they could no more doubt it than they could question their own existence. Yes, beloved believer, you and I have had times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord, and then our faith has mounted to the height of assurance. We have had confidence to lean our heads on the bosom of our Lord, and we have no more questioned our Master's affection to us than John did when he rested there. Jesus has killed our doubts by the closeness of His embrace. His love has been sweeter than wine to our souls.

성령은 종종 우리의 영혼들에게 예수님의 사랑을 증거하시는 것을 기뻐하십니다. 성령은 그리스도의 것들을 취하여서 우리에게 그것들을 계시해주십니다. 우리는 구름들로부터도 어떤 소리를 듣지 못하고, 밤에 어떤 환상을 보는 것도 아니지만 우리는 이들의 어느 것보다 더 확실한 증거를 갖고 있습니다.
천사가 하늘에서 날아와 그 성도에게 구세주의 사랑을 개인적으로 알려준다 해도, 그 증거는 성령께서 우리 마음에 심어주신 사랑보다 조금도 더 많은 만족을 주는 것은 아닐 것입니다.
천국문들에서 가장 가까운 곳에 살았던 주의 백성들 중 어떤 사람들에게 물어 보십시오. 그러면 그들은 그들을 향한 그리스도의 사랑이 너무나 분명하고 확실한 사실이었던 때들이 있었기 때문에 그들 자신의 존재를 의심할 수 없는 것처럼 그것을 의심할 수 없다고 말할 것입니다. 그렇습니다. 사랑하는 성도여, 그대와 나는 주님의 임재로부터 새로워지는 체험을 한 때들이 있었습니다. 그때 우리의 믿음은 확신의 고지(高地)에까지 올라 간적이 있습니다.
그때 우리는 우리의 머리를 주님의 가슴에 기댈만큼 확신이 있었습니다. 요한이 주님의 품에 기대었을(안식했을 때)때 주님의 사랑을 의심하지 않았던 것처럼 우리도 우리에 대한 주님의 사랑을 전혀 의심하지 않았습니다. 예수님은 그의 친밀한 포옹에 의하여 우리의 모든 의심을 다 쫓아 내셨습니다.(즉 죽여 버렸습니다.) 예수님의 사랑은 우리 영혼에 포도주보다 더 달콤했었습니다.(영문은 계속적 상태를 의미하는 현재완료형입니다.)
