내가 성령을 믿는 이유
Why I Believe in the Holy Spirit

기독교신앙의 모든 교리들(doctrines)중에 많은 사람들에게 가장 곤란(trouble)을 일으키는 교리는 성령(Holy Spirit)에 관한 교리인 것 같다. 이에 대하여 이 글에서는 성경에 근거하여, 성령은 인격자(a person)로서, 한 분의 하나님의 신성(the Godhead)의 본질 안에서 영원히 나란히 공존하시고, 실존하시는 세 인격들(three personalities)의 삼위(성부, 성자, 성령)일체 되시는 성령 하나님(God the Holy Spirit)이라고 정의하고 있다.

Of all the doctrines of the Christian faith, the one which causes the most trouble for many people seems to be that of the Holy Spirit. This is not surprising. In the introduction to this book, I said that my reason for writing it lay in the amazing number of Americans who are confused about who Jesus Christ is. I have found that even more people are confused about the fact that who he is - the Carpenter of Galilee who is and was and ever shall be the eternal, omnipotent Creator and God Almighty of his universe - constitutes the cardinal doctrine of the Christian religion. How natural, then, that even less is understood about the Holy Spirit.

Presenting the biblical evidence for what I believe about the Holy Spirit is the most effective way I can think of for stating why I believe in the Holy Spirit. At the same time finding out who the Bible says the Holy Spirit is, what he does, and how we may receive his blessings should clear away the confusion about him.
Let's look at that first question: Who is the Holy Spirit? ...
Or should we say, what is the Holy Spirit? An "it"? Or "he"? Or, perchance, a "she"? The Holy Spirit has been called all three by men and women. One strange cult tried to create something like an earthly family with a father, mother, and son by calling the Holy Spirit a "she." But the Bible never mentions anything like this.

내가 성령을 믿는 이유에 대하여 성경적인 증거를 제시하는 것은 내가 왜 성령을 믿는가를 말하기 위하여 내가 생각할 수 있는 가장 효과적인 방법이다. 동시에 성경의 말씀에 의하여 성령이 누구인가와 성령의 역사(성령이 행하시는 것)와 우리가 어떻게 그의 축복을 받을 수 있는가를 발견하면 그분(성령)에 관한 혼란을 일소할 것이다. (즉 성경에 의하여 성령에 관한 확실한 지식을 얻을 것이다.)
그러면 첫 번째 질문에 대하여 알아보자. 성령은 누구인가?......  아니면  우리는 성령이 무엇이라고 말해야 되는가? 그것(a it)인가? 혹은 그이(he)인가? 혹은, 아마, 그녀(a she)인가? 성령은 많은 남녀들에 의하여 이 세 가지가 모두 일컬어져 왔다. 한 이단 종파는 성령을 "그녀(a she)"라고 부름으로써 아버지, 어머니와 아들과 같이 이 세상의 가족개념 같은 것을 만들려고 노력했다.(즉 성령을 어머니로 해석한 것 같다.) 그러나 성경은 이와 같은 것을 언급한 적이 없다.

On the other hand, many people refer to the Holy Spirit as "it" - a force, a thing, a power, an influence. But is that what the Holy Spirit is? Or is the Holy Spirit a person? The Bible makes it clear, I believe, that the Holy Spirit is a person. However, the use of the word person is not intended to conjure up an image of a stick figure with arms, legs, fingers, and toes. Rather, let us use the true sense of the word, in which person means that which has personality, i.e., will, intellect, emotion, ability to communicate, and so on.
In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit is not clearly revealed, and the Jews very easily and understandably mistook the Spirit for being simply a power, an influence of God. The distinctions in the triune Godhead - the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - though present, were also not clearly revealed to them. As Dr. Benjamin B. Warfield, professor of systematic theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, said, "The Old Testament is like a richly furnished but dimly lit room; in the New Testament nothing is added except light."
Of course, there are today those who deny the personality of the Holy Spirit on the basis that the Bible doesn't say in so many words that the Holy Spirit is a person. I acknowledge that it doesn't. But neither does the Bible set forth arguments to prove that God exists; this is something which is plainly revealed and understood. And so it is with the Holy Spirit.

이에 반해서, 많은 사람들이 성령을 "그것(it)"으로 말하고 있다 - 즉 어떤 힘(a force), 어떤 사물(a thing), 어떤 능력(a power), 어떤 영향력 또는 감화력(an influence). 과연 그런 것이 성령이라는 것인가? 그렇지 않으면 성령은 인격자(a person)인가? 성경이 성령은 인격자라는 것을 명백히 하고 있다고 나는 믿는다. 그러나 인격자(person)란 단어의 사용은 주문으로 팔, 다리, 손가락과 발가락들을 갖는 장승(a stick figure)의 모습을 불러내는 것을 의도하지 않는다. 오히려, 그 말의 진정한 의미((sense)를 사용하자. 그 말(person)은 인격을 갖는다는 것을 의미한다, 즉 의지, 지성, 감정, 교통의 능력 등등을 의미한다.
구약성경에서는, 성령은 명백히 계시되고 있지 않았다. 그리고 그 당시의 유태인들은 매우 쉽게 그리고 이해할 수 있게 성령을 단지 어떤 능력, 하나님의 영향력(감화력)으로 오해했다. 성부(the Father), 성자(Son), 그리고 성령(Holy Spirit)과 같은 삼위일체의 구별은, 존재했지만, 또한 구약당시의 유태인들에게는 명백하게 계시되지 않았다.
프린스톤 신학대학의 조직신학 교수였던 워필드(B. B. Warfield)박사가 말한 것처럼, "구약성경은 방에 가구를 풍부하게 갖추었지만 조명이 어두운 방과 같다. 신약성경에서는 빛 외에 더한 것은 전혀 없다."
물론, 오늘날도 성경은 성령을 인격자(a person)라는 꼭 그런 말로 말하고 있지 않다는 근거에서 성령의 인격성(personality)을 부인하는 사람들이 있다. 나는 성령이 인격을 갖고 있지 않는다는 견해를 인정하지 않는다.(즉 나는 성령은 인격자라는 것을 시인한다.) 그러나 또한 성경은 하나님은 존재한다는 것을 증명하는 논의는 진열하고 있지 않다. 이것은 명백히 계시되고, 또 이해되고 있는 것이다. 그리고 그것은 성령에 대해서도 마찬가지다.

But now let's look and see: What is a person? What is a thing? What is a force? We are told by some that the Holy Spirit is a force, like electricity, or the wind, or gravity. What is the difference between a force and a person? Let's take the matter of intellect: Does electricity have a mind? Does the wind have a mind? Does gravity have intellect? Of course not. Take the matter of emotion: Did you ever hear of electricity or gravity laughing? crying? loving? Consider communication: Can a force express its thoughts? No! Electricity may be used to run a machine which will repeat people's words, but it cannot communicate. Does it have a will to decide that it will do this? Is it self-motivated, or is governed merely by external laws or by persons who direct it? It has no will of its own. A person does.

그러면 이제 알아보자. 인격자(a person)란 무엇인가? 사물(a thing)은 무엇인가? 힘(a force)이란 무엇인가? 어떤 사람들은 성령은 전기나, 바람이나, 중력같이 어떤 힘(a force)이라고 말하는 것을 듣는다. 그러면 힘(a force)과 인격(a person)간의 차이는 무엇인가?
지성(知性)의 문제를 생각해 보자. 전기가 정신(생각)을 갖고 있는가? 바람이 정신(생각)을 갖고 있는가? 중력(重力)이 지성을 갖고 있는가? 물론 아니다.
감정의 문제를 생각해 보자. 그대들은 전기나 중력이 웃고(?), 울부짖고(?), 사랑한다는 것(?)을 들어 본적이 있는가?
교통(통신 또는 교제)을 생각해 보라. 어떤 힘이 그의 생각들을 표현할 수 있는가? 아니다! 전기는 사람들의 말을 되풀이할 기계를 가동하기 위하여 사용될 수 있다. 그러나 그것은 교통(통신)할 수 없다. 전기는 그것이 이런 일(어떤 일)을 할 것을 결정할 의지를 갖고 있는가? 그것은 자신이 자기의지로 자신을 움직이게 하는가? 혹은 다만 외부의 법칙이나 그것을 지시하는 사람들에 의하여 지배되는가? 전기는 그 자신의 의지를 갖고 있지 않다. 그러나 인격자는 자신의 의지를 갖고 있다.

What do the Scriptures say about the Holy Spirit? Listen and judge for yourself. Is the Holy Spirit a force, as the cultists say, or is he a person, as the Church of Christ says? The Bible refers to the mind of the Spirit: "He that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints" (Rom. 8:27). The Holy Spirit has a mind; he makes intercession; he pleads for them. The Scriptures speak of the infinite comprehension of the Spirit: "The things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God" (1 Cor. 2:11). A force does not comprehend, but a person does. We have reference to the will of the Spirit: "Dividing to every man severally as he will" (1 Cor. 12:11) is a reference to the Holy Spirit. Yet a force has no will.

성경은 성령에 대하여 어떻게 말하고 있는가? 듣고 스스로 판단해 보라. 광신자들이 말하는 것처럼, 성령은 어떤 힘인가? 그렇지 않으면 그리스도의 교회가 말하는 것처럼, 그는 인격자인가? 성경은 성령의 생각을 말하고 있다.
"마음을 감찰하시는 이가 성령의 생각을 아시나니 이는 성령이 하나님의 뜻대로 성도를 위하여 간구 하심이니라"(롬8:27)
성령은 생각(정신)을 갖고 있다. 그는 중보(仲保)를 하신다. 그는 성도들을 위하여 간구 하신다. 성경은 성령의 무한한 이해력을 말하고 있다.
"사람의 사정을 사람의 속에 있는 영 외에는 누가 알리요 이와 같이 하나님의 사정도 하나님의 영 외에는 아무도 알지 못하느니라"(고전2:11) 힘은 이해를 하지 못한다. 그러나 인격자는 이해를 한다. 우리는 성령의 의지에 대한 언급을 알고 있다.
"이 모든 일은 같은 한 성령이 행 하사 그 뜻대로 각 사람에게 나눠주시느니라"(고전12:11) 라는 말씀은 성령에 관한 언급이다. 그러나 힘은 의지를 갖고 있지 않다.

The Holy Spirit not only knows but even foreknows: "He will declare to you the things that are to come" (John 16:13, RSV). Certainly wind, electricity, or any force knows neither what is now nor what is to come. The Bible refers to the love of the Spirit: "Now I beseech you ... for the love of the Spirit" (Rom. 15:30). We see that he acts; he strives with men: "My spirit shall not always strive with man" (Gen. 6:3). He commands and forbids: "The Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them" (Acts 13:2). He appoints officers in the church: "the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers" (Acts 20:28). He hears: "Whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak" (John 16:13). He speak about many things: about events in latter times, about the Son of Man. He cries in the hearts of Christians, "Abba, Father" (Rom. 8:15). "Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them" (Rev. 14:13). The Spirit said to Philip, "Go near, and join thyself to this chariot" (Acts 8:29). We see that all the attributes of personality are given to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is a person.
성령은 아실 뿐만 아니라 더욱이 미리 아신다.
"...그가 자의로 말하지 않고 오직 듣는 것을 말하시며 장래 일을 너희에게 알리시리라 "(요16:13). 물론 바람, 전기나, 다른 어떤 힘은 현재의 일도 장래의 일도 모른다.
성경은 성령의 사랑에 관하여 말하고 있다.
".....성령의 사랑으로 말미암아 너희를 권하노니..."(롬15:30). 우리는 성령께서 행하시는 것을 안다. 그리고 그분이 사람들과 함께 노력하신다는 것을 안다.
"여호와께서 가라사대 나의 신이 영원히 사람과 함께 하지 않으리니..."(창6:3).
성령은 명령하기도 하시고 금하기도 하신다.
".... 성령이 가라사대 내가 불러 시키는 일을 위하여 바나바와 사울을 따로 세우라 하시니..."(행13:2).
성령은 교회의 직분을 임명하신다.
" 성령이 저들 가운데 너희로 감독자를 삼고 하나님이 자기 피로 사신 교회를 치게 하셨느니라"(행20:28).
성령은 듣는 분이다. " ..... 오직 듣는 것을 말하시며 장래 일을 너희에게 알리시리라 "(요16:13).  성령은 많은 일들에 관하여 말씀하신다. 즉 이후에 일어날 사건들에 관하여, 그리고 인자(人子, 얘수 그리스도)에 관하여 말씀하시고 있다. 성령은 그리스도인들의 마음속에서 부르짖는다.
" ..아바 아버지"(롬8:15)
"....성령이 가라사대 그러하다 저희 수고를 그치고 쉬리니 이는 저희의 행한 일이 따름이라 하시더라 "(계14:13).
성령이 빌립에게 이르셨다. "가까이 가서, 이 병거에 함께 타라"(행8:29).
우리는 인격의 모든 속성들이 다 성령에게 부여되었다는 것을 안다. 그러므로 성령은 인격자(a person)이다.

Some people nevertheless will disagree on the basis that, in the Greek, neuter pronouns are sometimes combined with the word for "spirit." But there is a very natural explanation for this. "Spirit" in Greek is pneuma, just like the Old Testament word meaning "breath," originally, and "wind." When the Holy Spirit is revealed, this is the name he takes. Since pneuma is neuter gender in Greek, it is referred to by neuter pronouns. But rather than negating the fact of the personality of the Holy Spirit, this very grammatical rule serves to reinforce it, since there are instances in the New Testament where, contrary to expected usage, masculine pronouns are used to refer to the Holy Spirit.
To clarify our belief - our doctrine - of the Holy Spirit, we must ascertain not only that he is a person, but that he is divine.

그럼에도 불구하고 어떤 사람들은, 그리스어에서, 중성 대명사들은 종 종 정신(spirit)을 뜻하는 말과 결합한다는 근거에서 동의하지 않을 것이다. 그러나 이에 관한 매우 자연스러운(당연한) 설명이 있다. 그리스어에서 이 말(spirit)은 "프뉴마(pneuma)"이다. 이 말은 본래 "호흡"이나, "바람"을 의미하는 구약성서의 단어와 똑같다.
성령이 계시될 때, 이것은 성령이 취하는 이름이다. 프뉴마(pneuma, spirit)가 그리스어에서 중성이기 때문에 그것은 중성 대명사에 해당된다. 그러나 바로 이 문법규칙은, 성령의 인격성의 사실을 부정하기보다 오히려 그것의 강화에 이바지하고 있다. 왜냐하면, 예상용법과는 달리, 신약성경에서는 성령을 언급하기 위하여 남성 대명사들이 사용되는 예들이 있기 때문이다. 성령에 관한 우리의 신앙, 곧 우리의 교리를 명백하게 하기 위하여 우리는 성령이 인격자일 뿐만 아니라 그분이 하나님이라는 것을 확실히 해야한다.

Here again the Bible answers. In the Book of Acts we read that Peter said to Ananias, "Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost?"(5:3). When shortly thereafter Peter says to Ananias, "You have not lied to men but to God" (v.4, RSV), he makes it evident that the Holy Spirit is God. The Scriptures expressly describe all the attributes of divinity and ascribe them to the Holy Spirit. "Whither shall I go from thy Spirit?" (Ps. 139:7). He is infinite, omnipresent; he knows all things, he knows the future, he is all-powerful.
I believe, however, that we must understand that the Holy Spirit is not merely another name for God the Father, but that there is a distinction of the personalities of the Godhead. This is clearly seen in a number of places. The baptismal formula requires us to be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit - one name, three persons. In the baptism of Jesus, we see the Holy Spirit descend as a dove and the Father speak from above the clouds: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (Matt. 3:17). The three personalities are thus clearly revealed. The same truth is affirmed again in the Bible in many places, including Christ's penetrating words in what we call the Great Commission: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit ..." (Matt. 28:19, RSV)

"내가 주의 신을 떠나 어디로 가며 주의 앞에서 어디로 피하리이까?"(시139:7)
성령은 무한하시고, 편재(遍在)하신다.(어디에도 계신다.) 그는 모든 것을 아신다. 그는 장래를 아신다. 그는 전능하시다. 그러나 우리는 성령이 하나님 아버지의 다른 이름일 뿐만 아니라 그 신격(神格, the Godhead)의 점에서는 위격(位格)들(personalities)의 구별(성부, 성자. 성령)이 있다는 것을 알아야 한다고 나는 믿는다. 이것은 성경의 많은 곳에서 명백히 보여지고 있다. 세례식(침례식)은 아버지(성부)와 아들(성자)과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 받을 것을 우리에게 요구하고 있다 - 한 이름, 세 위격(位格)들(삼위 일체의 인격들).

"그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 족속으로 제자를 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 주고..."(마28:19).

In spite of all the clear teachings of Scripture, however, one ancient heresy persists in some places even today. "Modalism," from the word mode, teaches that the Holy Spirit is a divine person but that he is simply the Father or the Son. This is like saying, in effect, that the Father first came out on stage as an actor with a long beard; then he went backstage, changed his costume, and returned to the stage as a young man, the Son; going backstage again, he then returned in yet another costume as the Spirit - just one person, in three disguises. But the Bible teaches that the Godhead is a triune Godhead of three personalities within the one substance of God, coeternal, existing side by side forever: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God" (John 1:1).

그러나 성경의 모든 명백한 가르침에도 불구하고, 한 고대의 이설(異說)은 오늘날까지도 어떤 곳들에서 주장하고 있다. '방식(mode)'이라는 말에서 온 "삼위 양식설(Modalism)"은, 성령이 한 분의 인격적인 하나님이지만 그는 단지 성부나 성자일 뿐이라고 가르친다. 요컨대, 이것은  긴 턱수염을 달고 있는 아버지가  배우로서 처음에 무대에 나타났다. 그 다음에 그는 무대 뒤로 나가서, 그의 의상을 갈아입고, 젊은 아들의 모습으로 무대에 돌아 왔다. 그리고 다시 무대 뒤로 나간 다음에 그는  성령으로서 또 다른 복장을 입고 무대로 돌아왔다. - 바로 한 사람이 세 가지 변장으로 변모했던 것이다.
그러나 하나님은 하나의 하나님의 신성의 본질 안에서 영원히 나란히 공존하시고, 실존하시는 세 인격들(personalities)의 삼위일체(三位一體)의 하나님이시라는 것을 성경은 가르치고 있다.
"태초에 말씀이 계시니라 이 말씀이 하나님과 함께 계셨으니 이 말씀은 곧 하나님이시니라"(요1:1)

I believe in the Holy Spirit not only because of who the Bible says he is but because of what the Bible says he does. The Scriptures give us an amazing report of his activities. Certainly, the list is far too long to include here, but among his works are such as these: He created world, the world being created out of the Father through the Son and by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit inspired the writing of the Scriptures so that the Bible is not like any other book, but God the Holy Spirit is the author thereof working through the instrumentality of men. The Holy Spirit caused Christ to be conceived in the womb of Mary, of whom it is said, "The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee." It was the Holy Spirit who baptized Jesus, who led him and empowered him. The Holy Spirit is also described as having raised Jesus from the dead. The Holy Spirit, being poured out upon people, is the one who brought the Christian Church into existence on Pentecost.

나는 성령이 누구인가를 성경이 말하고 있기 때문만이 아니라 성경이 말하는 그의 행하심 때문에 성령을 믿는다. 성경은 성령의 활동에 관하여 놀라운 보고를 우리에게 주고 있다. 물론, 그 일람표는 너무 길어서 여기에 다 포함할 수 없다. 그러나 그의 역사(役事)들 중에 이런 것들이 있다. 성령은 이 세상을 창조하였다. 이 세상은 하나님 아버지로부터 그의 아들을 통하여, 성령에 의하여 만드신 것이다.
성령은 성경이 다른 어떤 책과 같지 않도록 성경의 저술에 영감을 주셨다. 그러나 성령 하나님은 사람들의 도움을 통하여 그것을 역사 하신 저자이시다. 성령은 마리아의 태내에 그리스도를 임신하게 하셨다. 마리아에게 일러진 말씀은; "....성령이 네게 임하시고 지극히 높으신 이의 능력이 너를 덮으시리니..."(눅1:35)
예수께 세례를 주신 분, 그를 이끌고 그에게 권능을 주신 분은 성령이시다. 또한 성령은 죽은 자들 가운데서 예수를 일으킨 것으로 기술되고 있다. 사람들에게 부어진 성령은 오순절(Penticost)에 기독교의 교회를 탄생시킨 분이시다.

The Holy Spirit regenerates men and quickens them from their deadness in sin. Jesus said that we must be born again of the Spirit. Unless we have been regenerated by the Spirit we are not Christians. The Holy Spirit indwells every Christian: "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" (1 Cor. 3:16). The Holy Spirit sanctifies, cleanses, makes pure and holy, and thus particularly is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not come to glorify himself or magnify himself; you notice that he does not even have a distinctive name. Jesus said, "When the Comforter is come ... he shall testify of me" (John 15:26).
When the Holy Spirit comes upon someone, one of the evidences is that the person speaks concerning the wonderful works God wrought in Christ the Redeemer. The Holy Spirit is the one who brings grace and enables the Christian to live the Christian life. "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance" (Gal. 5:22-23).

성령은 사람들을 개심(改心)시키고 죄 안에서 죽은 그들의 죽음에서 그들을 소생(부활)시키신다. 예수께서는 우리가 성령으로 거듭나야한다고 말씀하셨다. 우리가 성령에 의하여 거듭나지 아니하면 우리는 그리스도인들이 아니다. 성령은 모든 그리스도인 안에 내주(內住)하신다. "너희가 하나님의 성전인 것과 하나님의 성령이 너희 안에 거하시는 것을 알지 못하느뇨"(고전3:16)
성령은 신성하게 하시고, 정결케 하시고, 순결하고 거룩하게 하신다. 그리고 특히 성령은 순결하고 거룩하시다. 성령은 그 자신을 영광스럽게 하거나 그 자신을 찬미하기 위하여 오시지 않는다. 그대들은 그가 심지어 특별한 이름조차 갖고 있지 않다는 것을 알아채리라.
"내가 아버지께로서 너희에게 보낼 보혜사 곧 아버지께로서 나오시는 진리의 성령이 오실 때에 그가 나를 증거하실 것이요 "(요15:26).
성령이 어떤 사람에게 오시면, 그 증거들의 하나는 그 사람이 하나님께서 구속주(救贖主) 그리스도 안에서 행하신 놀라운 사역들에 관하여 말한다는 것이다. 성령은 은혜를 가져오고 그 그리스도인으로 하여금  그리스도인의 삶을 살게 할 수 있는 분이시다.
"오직 성령의 열매는 사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과 온유와 절제니 이같은 것을 금지할 법이 없느니라"(갈 5:22-23)

A further reason I believe in the Holy Spirit is the experience of his indwelling. Those who know the Spirit know that they have received "the earnest" of their inheritance, for the Holy Spirit also gives us the assurance that we have eternal life. It is the Holy Spirit who bears witness with our spirits that we are the children of God. It is the Holy Spirit who cries out, "Abba, Father," and makes us know that God is our Father and we are his sons and daughters who have been redeemed and are on our way to heaven. It is the Holy Spirit who can enable us as Christians to say, "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine; O what a foretaste of glory divine." If we have that assurance and that certainty in our hearts, then we know that we have the Holy Spirit within us.

내가 성령을 믿는 더 큰 이유는 그분의 내주(內住)의 체험이다. 성령을 아는 사람들은 그들이 하늘에서 받을 기업(基業)의 "보증(계약금)"을 받았다는 것을 안다. 왜냐하면 성령은 또한 우리가 영원한 생명을 갖고 있다는 확신을 우리에게 주기 때문이다. 우리가 하나님의 자녀라는 것을 우리의 영들과 함께 증거를 하시는 분은 성령이시다. "아바, 아버지"라고 부르짖고, 하나님이 우리의 아버지라는 것과 우리는 구속된 그의 자녀들이고 우리는 지금 하늘로 가는 도중에 있다는 것을 우리로 하여금 알게 하는 분은 성령이시다. 그리스도인들인 우리로 하여금, "복된 확신(보증)이여, 예수는 나의 것, 오 하늘의 영광의 시식(맛봄)은 얼마나 감미로운가"라고 말할 수 있게 하시는 분은 성령이시다. 만일 우리가 우리의 마음속에 그 확신(보증)과 그 확실성을 갖는다면, 우리는 우리 안에 성령을 갖고 있는 것을 안다.

The Bible says that every Christian receives the Holy Spirit when he or she becomes a Christian. But then we are to seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit, for we are leaky vessels. We need to have the fullness of his presence. I believe the reason there are so many defeated and downcast Christians is that they are not filled with the Holy Spirit. In our homes, are there love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness? Or are there strife, discouragement, bickering, worry, anxiety, sadness? All these are evidences that the Spirit of God is not there, for he is the Spirit of joy and peace and love. The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

남자나 여자가 그리스도인이 될 때 모든 그리스도인은 성령을 받는다고 성경은 말하고 있다. 그러나 그 다음에 우리는 성령으로 충만 되기를 구해야 한다. 왜냐하면 우리는 연약한 그릇들이기 때문이다. 우리는 그분의 임재의 충만을 갖는 것을 필요로 한다. 그렇게 많은 좌절되고 기가 꺾인 그리스도인들이 존재하는 이유는 그들이 성령으로 충만 되지 않은 것이라고 나는 생각한다. 우리의 가정들에는, 사랑, 기쁨, 평안, 인내, 친절이 있는가? 그렇지 않으면 싸움, 낙담, 언쟁, 걱정, 근심, 슬픔이 있는가? 이 모든 것들은 하나님의 성령이 거기에 있지 않다는 증거들이다. 왜냐하면 성령은 기쁨과 평안과 사랑의 영이기 때문이다. 하나님의 사랑은 성령의 도움으로 우리들의 마음에서 밖으로 흘려진다.

If the fullness of the Spirit of God is missing in your life and you would like to know it, if you want to live and serve God as he would have you do, I have a suggestion for you to try. Dr. Bill Bright asked this of the people of our church at a service several years ago, and it had a profound effect at that time. He recommended to all those who wanted to be not merely hearers of the Word but doers also that they go home, find a good-sized piece of paper, and on it write down all the specific sins present in their lives. List the sins of disposition, he said: impatience, bitterness, jealousy, envy, grudges held, slights unforgiven, animosity, anger, lust, lasciviousness, unclean thoughts, greed, cupidity, avarice, and so on. Be specific; name names, was the instruction. Don't forget the sins of omission: prayerlessness, cold-heartedness to God, faithlessness to his Word, service unrendered, witness not given, and other such sins - not hiding them in your heart and failing to meditate on them.

When you finish, Dr. Bright said, then pray that the Holy Spirit will search you and try you to see if there is still anything wicked in you that you have not confessed and forsaken. When the Holy Spirit brings something else to mind as you wait before him, write it down. Having written that down, wait and ask, "Holy Spirit of God, search me and try my heart, and see if there is still anything wicked in me." Wait again, and you'll get a special delivery letter. Continue to ask and wait, until you can - perhaps, and most likely for the first time in your life - wait before God with a conscience free of offense toward God and your fellow human beings. I can think of no greater blessing. Even this doesn't  mean we are perfect, of course, but it means there is nothing that will come to mind that we have not confessed, repented of, and forsaken.

그리고 빌 브라이트 박사는 다음과 같이 말했다. 그대들이 모든 죄의 기록을 마쳤을 때, 그 다음에는 성령께서 그대들을 살피시고 그대들 안에 그대들이 고백하지 않고 버리지 않은 악한 것이 아직도 있는지 알아보기 위하여 그들을 시험하실 것을 기도하라. 그대들이 성령 앞에서 기다릴 때 성령께서 마음에 그 외 어떤 것을 떠오르게 하시면, 그것을 기록하라. 그것을 다 쓴 다음에 기다리며 요구하라, "하나님의 성령이시여, 나를 살피시고 나의 마음을 시험하사, 내 안에 아직도 어떤 악한 것이 있는지 알아보십시오"라고. 그리고 다시 기다려라, 그러면 그대들은 특별한 배달편지를 받을 것이다. 그대들은 - 아마, 그리고 그대들의 평생에 처음일 가능성이 크다 - 하나님과 그대들의 동료 인간들에게 대한 범죄를 짓지 않는 양심을 갖고 하나님 앞에서 기다릴 수 있을 때까지, 계속 요구하며 기다려라. 나는 이보다 더 큰 축복을 생각 할 수 없다. 물론, 이것조차도 우리가 완전하다는 것을 의미하지 않는다. 그러나 그것은 마음에 떠오르는 것으로서, 우리가 고백하지 않고, 회개하지 않고, 버리지 않은 것은 없다는 것을 의미한다.

Now, write in large letters across the page (or pages): "The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin." Claim that promise by faith. Believe it. At this point, for the first time, perhaps, you will be ready to do what Jesus said - to ask that the Father fill you with the Holy Spirit. "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" (Luke 11:13). Ask the Father for the Holy Spirit. He cannot come when we are filled with self and with sin, with self-righteousness and pride and a pharisaical spirit. If we humble ourselves before God and confess our sins and our stiff-necked attitude, then God will come and fulfill his promise and fill us with his Spirit - the Spirit of love and the Spirit of joy. He will give us a new heart - a soft heart.

이제 죄들을 기록한 종이 페이지(페이지들)를 가로질러 큰 글씨로 다음 같은 글을 써라.
"예수 그리스도의 피가 모든 죄에서 우리를 깨끗케 하신다"라고. 그리고 믿음으로 그 약속을 주장하라. 그것을 믿어라. 이 시점에서, 처음으로, 아마, 그대들은 예수께서 말씀하신 것 - 즉 하나님 아버지께서 성령으로 너희들을 채우실 것이라는 말씀 - 의 요구를 행할 준비가 될 것이다.
"너희가 악할찌라도 좋은 것을 자식에게 줄줄 알거든 하물며 너희 천부께서 구하는 자에게 성령을 주시지 않겠느냐 하시니라"(눅11:13)
하나님 아버지께 성령을 구하라. 성령은 우리가 자아(自我)로 그리고 죄로, 자기의(自己義)로 그리고 교만과 위선(바리새인의 정신)으로 차있을 때에는 오시지 않는다.
만일 우리가 하나님 앞에 겸손하게 자신을 낮추고 우리의 죄와 완고한 태도를 고백하면, 하나님은 오셔서 그의 약속을 이루시고 그의 성령, 즉 사랑의 영과 기쁨의 영으로 우리를 채우실 것이다. 그분은 새 마음, 즉 부드러운 마음을 우리에게 주실 것이다.

Now take the paper and burn it. (On one occasion when I asked a congregation to try mode of confession, someone asked me, "What are we going to do, sign this and turn it in? That might land you in prison!") Tear it up! Throw it away! But claim the promise and believe God and go forth to live and walk in the Spirit and serve him by the power of his Spirit. "Be filled with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 9:17, RSV).
Here is our challenge. James says, let's not be like those that hear the Word and go away and do nothing about it; or like those that behold their faces in a mirror and go away and forget how they look. I believe that it is only as we ask for this cleansing and fulness of the Holy Spirit that we will enter into an experience of blessedness, a closeness and a realization of the presence of God in our lives that we have never known before.

이제 그 종이를 가져다가 그것을 태워버려라.(언젠가 내가 교회의 회중(會衆)에게 이런 방식의 고백을 해볼 것을 권했을 때, 어떤 사람이 나에게 물었다. "이제 우리는 어떻게 할까요, 이 종이에 서명하고 그것을 제출해야 하나요?"라고. 그렇게 하면 그대는 감옥에 들어갈지도  모른다!)
그것을 찢어 버려라! 그것을 던져 버려라! 그러나 그 약속을 주장하고 하나님을 믿어라 그리고 나아가서 성령 안에서 살고 걸어라 그리고 성령의 능력에 의하여 하나님을 섬겨라.
"예수께서 나를 보내어 너로 다시 보게 하시고 성령으로 충만하게 하신다 하니 "(행9:17)
여기에 도전이 있다. 야고보는 말한다. 말씀을 듣고 가서 그것을 행하지 않는 자들같이 되지 말라. 또 거울로 자기들의 얼굴을 보고 가서 자기들의 모양이 어떠한 것을 곧 잊어버리는 자들같이 되지 말라고.(참고 약1:23-24)
우리가 이런 죄의 씻음과 성령의 충만함을 요구할 때만,  우리는 축복의 체험, 즉 우리의 삶에서 우리가 전에 결코 알지 못했던 하나님의 임재의 실감과 친밀함에 들어갈 것을 나는 믿는다.
