다음 글은 필립 얜시(Philip Yancey)가 쓴 인간 고통의 문제에 대한 명저로서 미국 기독교 도서 최우수 저서상(Gold Medallion Award)을 수상한 『고통의 때에 하나님은 어디 계시는가?: 고난의 때에 대처하기 위한 위로와 치유의 안내 (Where is God When It Hurts?: A Comforting, Healing Guide for Coping with Hard Times)』에서 발췌번역한 글입니다.
고통의 때
하나님께서 내 고통을 정말로 이해하신다는 확신을 얻습니다
예수님 때문에 나는 심연에 들이대고 “거기 위에 계신 분, 내 고통에 신경 쓰기라도 하십니까?”하고 외칠 필요가 전혀 없습니다. 고통이 존재한다는 것이 하나님이 나를 버리셨다는 것을 의미하지는 않습니다. 오히려 이 땅에 와 우리와 함께 하심으로써 하나님은 자신이 우리의 신음 소리를 들으시며 심지어 우리와 함께 신음하신다는 확실하며 역사적인 증거를 제시하셨습니다. 우리가 시련을 견디어낼 때 하나님은 풀무 속의 네 번째 사람처럼 우리 곁에 서 계십니다 [다니엘 3:24-25에서 언급된 풀무 속의 네 번째 사람을 의미함].
왜 예수님은 고통을 겪고 죽어야했습니까? 이 질문에 답하려면 아예 책을 한권 따로 써야 하고, 사실 많은 책이 이런 동기로부터 씌여졌습니다. 그러나 성경이 제시하는 답 가운데 가장 불가사의한 대답이 여기 있습니다. 고통은 하나님에게 어떤 “배움의 경험(learning experience)”이라는 역할을 담당했습니다. 이런 말은 희미하게 이단적이라는 느낌을 줄지도 모릅니다. 그러나 나는 단지 히브리서의 표현을 따르고 있을 뿐입니다.
히브리서는 구약성서에 깊이 침잠해 있던 유태인 독자들을 대상으로 쓴 책입니다. 히브리서 저자는 예수님이 “더 낫다(better)”--히브리서 전체에 걸쳐 핵심 단어로 나타남--는 것을 보여주려고 노력합니다. 예수님은 어떤 면에서 히브리서 독자들이 익히 알고 있던 종교적 체제보다 더 나은 것일까요? 더 강력한가요? 더 인상적인가요? 아닙니다. 히브리서는 예수님이 더 나은 이유는 그분이 하나님과 우리 사이의 괴리를 없앴기 때문이라고 강조해서 말합니다. “그가 아들이시라도 받으신 고난으로 순종함을 배워서” (5:8). 다른 곳에서 히브리서는 우리 구원을 창조하신 분이 고난을 통해 온전하게 되셨다고 우리에게 말합니다 (2:10).
가늠할 수 없는 신비로 가득한 이런 말씀들에는 적어도 이런 의미가 있음이 분명합니다. 하나님이 육신이 되신 것은 우리뿐만 아니라 하나님께도 어떤 의미가 있었다는 것입니다. 인간의 역사는 우리가 하나님을 어떻게 경험하는가에 의해 결정되는 것이 아니라 하나님이 우리를 어떻게 경험하셨는가에 의해 결정됩니다 (Human history revolves around not our experience of God, but his experience of us). 물론 어떤 차원에서 하나님은 육체적 고통을 이해하셨습니다. 왜냐하면 그분은 위해(harm)를 경고하는 우리 몸의 놀라운 신경 체계를 고안하셨기 때문입니다. 그러나 영(a Spirit)이신 그분이 육체적 고통을 느끼신 적이 있을까요? 하나님이 육신이 되셨을 때(하나님 자신이 인간이 된다는 것이 어떤 것인지를 경험하셨던 그 시점)에야 이것이 가능했습니다.
지상에서 삼십 삼년을 사시면서 예수님은 시련과 거절과 배반에 대해 배우셨습니다. 그리고 그분은 또한 고통에 대해서도 배웠습니다. 나를 고발하는 사람이 내 얼굴에 붉은 손가락 자국을 남기는 것, 쇠가 곳곳에 박힌 채찍이 등을 내려치는 것, 투박한 쇠못이 근육과 힘줄과 뼈를 뚫고 두드려 박히는 것이 어떤 느낌을 주는지를 배웠습니다. 지상에서 하나님의 아들은 이 모든 것을 배웠습니다.
어떤 불가해한 의미에서, 예수님 때문에 하나님은 우리가 외치는 소리를 이전과는 다르게 들으십니다. 히브리서의 저자는 우리가 겪는 모든 일을 하나님 자신이 이미 겪으셨다는 사실에 놀라움을 표현합니다. “우리에게 있는 대제사장은 우리 연약함을 체휼하지 아니하는 자가 아니요 모든 일에 우리와 한결같이 시험을 받은 자로되 죄는 없으시니라” (4:15).
우리에게 있는 대제사장은 고통의 학교를 졸업했기 때문에 “저가 무식하고 미혹한 자를 능히 용납할 수 있는 것은 자기도 연약에 싸여 있음이라” (5:2)라는 표현이 가능합니다. 예수님 때문에 하나님은 우리의 고통을 이해하십니다. 정말로 이해하십니다. 우리의 눈물은 그분의 눈물이 됩니다. 그분은 우리를 저버리지 않으십니다. 아이가 아픈 농부, 백혈병으로 몸이 부어오른 여덟 살 난 아이, 유바 시(Yuba City)의 애통하는 친지들 [저자는 책 앞부분에서 캘리포니아 유바 시에서 한 고등학교의 성가대가 탄 버스가 당한 사고로 29명이 죽고 25명이 다친 사건을 언급함], 루이지애나(Louisiana)의 나병 환자들 [저자는 책 앞부분에서 루이지애나 카빌(Carville)에 있는 나병환자 수용시설을 언급함], 이 사람들은 누구도 홀로 고통 받지 않아도 됩니다.
티 에스 엘리엇(T. S. Eliot)은 그의 『사중주 (Four Quartets)』의 한 작품에서 이렇게 쓰고 있습니다.

I gain the confidence that God truly understands my pain
Because of Jesus, I need never cry into the abyss, "Hey, you up there--do you even care?" The presence of suffering does not mean that God has forsaken me. To the contrary, by joining us on earth God gave solid, historical proof that he hears out groans, and even groans them with us. When we endure trials, he stands beside us, like the fourth man in the fiery furnace.
Why did Jesus have to suffer and die? The question deserves an entire book, and has prompted many books, but among the answers the Bible gives is this most mysterious answer: Suffering served as a kind of "learning experience" for God. Such words may seem faintly heretical, but I am merely following phraseology from the book of Hebrews.
Hebrews was written to a Jewish audience saturated in the Old Testament. The author strives to show that Jesus is "better"--a key word throughout the book. How is he bgetter than the religious system they were used to? More powerful? More impressive? No, Hebrews emphasizes that Jesus is better because he has spanned the chasm between God and us. "Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered" (5:8). Elsewhere, that book tells us that the author of our salvation was made perfect through suffering (2:10).
These words, full of fathomless mystery, surely mean at least this: the Incarnation had meaning for God as well as for us. Human history revolves around not our experience of God, but his experience of us. On one level, of course, God understood physical pain, for he designed the marvelous nervous system that warns against harm. But had he, a Spirit, ever felt physical pain? Not until the Incarnation, the wrinkle in time when God himself experienced what it is like to be a human being.
In thirty-three years on earth Jesus learned about hardship and rejection and betrayal. And he learned too about pain: what it feels like to have an accuser leave the red imprint of his fingers on your face, to have a whip studded with metal lash across your back, to have a crude iron spike pounded through muscle, tendon, and bone. On earth, the Son of God learned all that.
In some incomprehensible way, because of Jesus, God hears our cries differently. The author of Hebrews marvels that whatever we are going through, God has himself gone through. "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin" (4:15).
We have a high priest who, having graduated from the school of suffering, "is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness" (5:2). Because of Jesus, God understands, truly understands, our pain. Our tears become his tears. We are not abandoned. The farmhand with the sick child, the swollen eight-year-old with leukemia, the grieving relatives in Yuba City, the leprosy patients in Louisiana--none has to suffer alone.
T. S. Eliot wrote in one of his Four Quartets:
The wounded surgeon plies the steel
That questions the distempered part;
Beneath the bleeding hands we feel
The sharp compassion of the healer's art
Resolving the enigma of the fever chart.
The surgery of life hurts. It helps me, though, to know that the surgeon himself, the Wounded Surgeon, has felt every stab of pain and every sorrow.
